This article seems to have picked out some people in a way that feels very much like the articles blaming avocado toast etc for issues caused by inflation and suppressed wages etc…
Funny my mother owes me around 10k but I know will never be able to pay me back.
People are “reluctant to stop spending” because for most that means stopping all bill payments, or all rent payments, or all food payments. That’s assuming no transport, childcare, healthcare or debt costs are present.
Yeah I have that nasty habit of eating too.
This article is the clearest example of pure state driven propaganda as we have seen yet from the BBC. It promotes the idea, held by many in government that the cost of living crisis is caused by people not being able to budget and not by soaring inflation and uncontrolled profiteering by big business.
What a disgusting, bare-faced, government hit job the article this is. Shame on you BBC.
What a terrible article, picked two people who don’t represent common people struggling to makes ends meet. Picks two entitled planks who have an addiction to shiny new toys
Anyone got a link to the research and survey itself? Can’t seem to find it on google
Financial literacy is a big problem in the uk. Very few know what their money means and social media gives a warped view of other peoples wealth.
Standard ‘feckless millenials who can’t budget’ article from the BBC which are becoming all the more prevalent these days. To be honest these people are keeping the economy ticking over (albeit with debt that will eventually come crashing down) by spending unlike the boomers who’s wealth is all tied up in property and pensions and bonds, which doesn’t contribute much to economic growth (see how I just generalised a whole age group there)
>she feels like the family deserves it
Removing the money feed is the only thing that stops these lifestyle debt junkies.
So basically single mum spends money on stuff she doesn’t have to and moans that she’s got no money. How about stop doing that? Another option is if you really can’t control your spending move back in with your parents and let them control your bank account. That way you can’t spend what you can’t access.
I wonder how many people who are struggling will now be encouraged to get into extreme debt as a result of this article; & at the very start of the summer holidays, no less – the timing couldn’t be more blatant.
‘Please screw yourselves over to prop up the economy our government is ruining through ineffective policies’.
The BBC really doesn’t care about showing its support for our broken government these days.
You owe your mum 6 grand. THEN FUCKING PAY HER BACK, YOU SELFISH PRICK! I can understand wanting to treat her kids but for fuck’s sake, if she had to borrow cash from her mother, then she should be making every effort to repay her.

The article reads like one of those articles that blames everyone for the costs of living via singling out those who have managed their cash poorly.
Lol because we all know that cancer, accidents and other unfroseen events respect the wealthy and stay well clear!
Spending 6k of your mums money on nonessentials? Christ. When it’s not a gift thats basically just theft.
Reality is going to feel like a slap in the face for these people if they ever experience true financial hardship.
This does not reflect well on those of us who never buy what we don’t need and still can’t pay our bills 🙁
