But the UK isn’t in the EU so we don’t have to impose EU rules on VAT.
I wonder how many of those in Northern Ireland who support the NIP are aware that NIP didn’t just cover goods but rules on taxation and government assistance that the UK weren’t allowed to apply in Northern Ireland. So for example changes to VAT, for example making womens sanitary products VAT free, weren’t allowed to be applied to NI.
The Next Sequence of Events?
UK PM Liz Truss will almost certainly start a trade war with the EU over the Protocol Bill. I suspect it will be deeply unpopular among the English electorate by the next election though. Starmer will campaign on a sensible trade deal with the EU, but not entering the CU/SM. The EU will know that Starmer is the PM-in-waiting, and respond accordingly, by leaving a trail for him to follow to get a win on an EU trade deal. Within months of a Labour government the Protocol Bill will be scrapped.
Great so idiot von de leyen wants more conflict and economic woes for Europe… thanks Ursula
Cut off their gas, Boris. They will do anything for gas, no moral bounds at all
Poor UK. How dare we not give them exceptions to everything?
