Sarajevo at dusk

  1. Sarajevo is the most charming European capital. No one can tell me otherwise.

There is something about the rustic, medieval feeling that makes it so appealing. What makes it different from others, like Tallinn who also has a cozy old town, is that it’s perched between gorgeous mountains, adding a layer of fascination, along with an authentic ambience that some old towns have lost with a more concentrated focus on tourism.

What’s crazy about my experience is that I went there on a whim. I met two Australian backpackers while in Belgrade and they didn’t say more than two sentences describing Sarajevo, and I was intrigued. Next year I booked my ticket and went there for the entire summer.

I highly recommend visiting Bosnia and the Balkans in general. If you’re looking for a Bosnia only experience, then Sarajevo, picturesque Mostar and its famous bridge, along with the attractive scenery in the small town of Jajce, and Kravice’s captivating waterfall that rivals Plitvice are for you. If you want to make it a trip, Dubrovnik, Split, Kotor and Budva are all very close, too.

Also, if you’re into history, Sarajevo, and Bosnia in general, is an absolutely splendid place to learn. However, I suggest you get into shape if you’re not already. While the old town is mostly flat, your residence will likely be situated on some very steep streets!
