Something we should be considering in the south – a ban on holiday homes

  1. Next up you’ll be proposing confiscating family homes if there’s a spare room.

The solution to thousands of foreign nationals arriving each week looking for accomodation is not to confiscate the homes Irish people have worked their whole lives for.

  2. Holiday homes are a luxury, tax them as such. It’s extremely simple for those who don’t own one, but those who do are those who carry the balance of power already in this society.

Edit: The temporarily embarrassed holiday home owners are out in force already I see.

  3. The article is about a rich English man who is disgusted he has to pay more tax on his holiday home in Wales while actual welsh people suffer through a housing crisis.

Edit: people seem to be confused

    * the British government aren’t “banning holiday homes”

    * this is about second home ownership and not “killing tourism”

    * they’re not becoming communist,

    * the Welsh subreddits are all in favour of this policy,

    * Welsh people generally are very much supportive of this kind of thing

    * it’s bloody weird that Irish lads are appalled at what the Welsh are doing to the poor English second home owners.

  4. Holiday homes serve a purpose of bringing foreign money into areas of Ireland that would not normally draw that much money in, the need for houses is greatest in urban areas with access to jobs, education and other facilities. It wouldn’t make sense to start settling people into rural communities with no amenities to support them.

If you are looking for some way out of the housing crisis instead of housing people in these areas which will just cause a huge strain on the already strained local government, maybe offering state backed interest free mortgages to those working families who are unable to find loans from banks.

Currently there around [60k](https://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/homes-and-property/interiors/what-state-are-ireland-s-62-000-holiday-homes-in-post-lockdown-1.4555185#:~:text=There%20are%20over%2062%2C000%20holiday,according%20to%20the%20last%20census) holiday homes around Ireland, but almost [3 times](https://www.irishtimes.com/business/economy/ireland-has-10th-highest-rate-of-vacant-homes-in-the-world-study-finds-1.4709476) that amount of unoccupied homes that are intended to be lived in, that’s almost [10%](https://www.cso.ie/en/releasesandpublications/ep/p-cp1hii/cp1hii/hs/#:~:text=Ireland's%20housing%20stock%20in%202016,enumerated%20in%20the%202016%20Census) of the total housing stock of Ireland, this would make much more sense economically.

  5. Build log cabin accommodations, 6/8 weeks you have 500 units in place …no planning permission….just temporary roads needed …and basic power , water . Instead will rent of private business at over 400 million a year …with nothing at the end …

  6. It’s a typical left wing solution that will eventually require a solution . It’s not fucking rocket science if there is a shortage of homes build more homes .. that’s how capatilism works .

  7. Absurd. If individuals have to funds to purchase a holiday home for themselves, why shouldn’t they be allowed to purchase one? What’s next, 1 car per family??

  8. I agree on banning holiday homes, many of our beaches are being closed off by people buying in country lanes that lead to the beach, there is no possibility of staying in those locations unless you pay through the nose, instead of camping or camper van facilities. It’s disgusting that we are blocking people that don’t have the money to pay heavy rates or lack the money to buy to be able to stay in some of these beautiful locations.

  9. Ban holiday homes? What dystopian nonsense. How about telling the vulture funds and greedy property developers to fuck off and leave the quasi communistic, hippy dippy bullshit to the side. It’s about making this country better for everyone not worse for everyone. An appropriate amount of likes for such bollox……

  10. I think you need to get f*cked and mind your own business. You’re jealous that people who worked harder than you have more than you.

  11. The apartment beside mine is empty for the 8 years I live here, owned by an elderly British couple who I have seen stay in it once.
