Do you agree with that ?

  1. I lived there for close on 10 years up unti recently.

    And I kind of agree.

If your not going into a pub then there’s fuck all to do. Very few tourist attractions other than just walking around.

  2. From and lived in galway most of my life and I agree.

There are pubs, restaurants, and connemara. There’s nothing else.

Look up all the “10 things to do in galway” lists. Probably 7 of the things will be within a stones throw of eyre square, and some of these aren’t even really things to do !

“Take a stroll down shop street” it takes 3 fucking minutes, it’s not an activity!

  3. It’s a great base for seeing Cliffs of Moher, Connemara, Aran Islands but half day would be enough to see the city itself. It is a very enjoyable place but not a destination by itself imo

  4. I would. First time I went to Galway city I was like…that’s it? You’d walk it in a day, if even. Its a large town, not a city.

  5. I have to agree. Luckily I like playing music so there is no much more I need, this city fits my needs.

  6. Unless it’s pub based or alcohol based yes, but 90% of Irish socialising is alcohol based and your considered a dry shite if you want to do anything else

  7. Is he rude just because of this comment or what? Because i think it’s a bit much to call him rude just because he didn’t enjoy the place?

  8. I agree. Lived there 3.5 years. Moved from Amsterdam. Great place for being student or starting a family. Being single in 30s not so. Nature and people are great.

  9. Unless your on the piss, there is literally nothing to do.

If you have a family, the aquarium and leisureland would get pretty boring pretty quickly and neither of those are exactly unique attractions anyway.

  10. The Spanish Arch is a thing Id heard about before Id ever been to Galway. What a fuckin non-event. Galway does have a nice feel to though, people are friendly

  11. I think there’s a bit of familiarity breeds contempt going on here. I’m American and my mothers from the city, we spent summers there growing up. The historic sites and cultural scene (both street and theatre) is astounding for a place it’s size. I’d die to get a couple of weeks there now to explore it all. You don’t need cheesy theme parks to make a place interesting.

  12. I don’t think Galway is trying to be a big city, its a big town which is why is so friendly, has a great nightlife and is a bit boring if you don’t bother to be social to entertain yourself. Like it’s a town on the west coast of Ireland with a University and good employment opportunities, nobody claims its a European capital or big city

  13. Well they aren’t really wrong.. I lived in Galway for a good while and its great craic and nice place minus the traffic but I found very little to do other than head down the pubs. Some music on or sports but sure that’s everywhere else also?

I had some yank friends over to visit and they said the same. They were expecting loads but most things are out of the city. They went to the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher but sure they are in Clare? Only thing that jumps to mind is the escape rooms. At least its overall a pretty city especially if you get some sun.

  14. I disagree, plenty of tours out to connemara , museum , theatre , music. I will admit the shopping has gone down hill. We also have award winning restaurants. Plenty to do if people looked

  15. No. I’ve been a few times and it was lovely there. I’ll be honest, I feel this way with Kerry. You can see the mountains, which are lovely, but literally every town I saw had nothing to do, othwr than crappy shops, pubs with only burgers on the menu, and sheep shearing or other banal attractions. The entire area was geared towards providing stupid Yanks a plastic paddy experience. The week felt like a month.

  16. As a base Galway is great. 1 day in the city, wander about, maybe catch a show in Druid or Taibhearc. Have very decent food. Go to the museum, shop, wander the canals. Not the worst way to spend the day. Drive out to Bridget’s Gardens the second day, visit Aughnanure Castle while out that direction. Another day the Corrib Princess, golf if that’s your thing, kayaking, horse riding maybe. Another day a bus tour out to Connemara or a drive out to Lenane. There’s Wildlands too and the various pet farms, the aquarium, swimming in the ocean. I guess if you’re on a holiday you might make a point of seeing these things and doing as much as possible.

  17. What do people actually mean when they say there’s nothing to do in a city? Like what could be added to the city that would make it more appealing?

  18. Galway is one of the best places to be in the summer; the Film Fleadh, the Arts Festival, Galway races, and everything in there, one after another.

But aside from that… Yep. It’s kinda boring.

  19. This is true for most of Ireland tbh… I love some spots in ireland but it’s almost like Minecraft (or Lego for anyone older)… you build up this lovely little spot and it’s class looking, great vibe if you’re doing the one thing you’re meant to (pub)…. But you’re kind of left thinking “now what”.

Dublin is kind of the outlier here (maybe cork too) but in general most places in Ireland can be boiled down to drinking and shopping and fa else.. good luck finding somewhere with facilities like regular art classes, boxing gyms you can just stroll into, or recreational things like that.

    Edit: imo

  20. Salthill. Arcade and gambling all day and drinking in the evening. What more could you want? Not a drinker? Get an ice cream and walk the prom to kick the wall. Or play mini golf. Or go dogging in Barna Woods. Loads to do.

  21. As a non-Irish person who just visited Ireland, Galway was one of my stops, spent 3 days there and did something fun every day. Day 1 we pub crawled around the venues playing traditional music. Day 2 we went to the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher, day 3 we went to a club to see a band and dance. So imo it was a fun town.

  22. I’ve spent 1 or 2 sober weekends in Galway, and I was very bored. I don’t think he’s rude, he’s correct.

  23. I live in Galway and absolutely agree, whenever I’d go into town with my friend with the intent to hang around we always end up bored in 30 or 40 minutes

  24. As a person that gave up on the drink a few years ago I find most of Ireland is quite empty if its not beautiful scenery or pubs.

  25. Hey John Romero lives in Galway. How can somewhere be boring when there is a greater than zero chance you will run into the guy who made Doom?

  26. Yes, but everywhere is fucking boring. People should fuck off and be bored somewhere else, I’m perfectly happy with Galway or Cork or Dublin being boring.
