[Background info and details](https://www.art-is-crime.com)

On one hand, this does seem like a very sloppy work by our State Police, but on the other hand art has been used in money laundering schemes for decades. The emergence of NFTs just made the whole thing much, much easier because now there’s no need for physical contact between seller and buyer (so you can’t organise a stakeout and gain an incriminating evidence) and since all transactions happen on a blockchain, tracing the participants can be quite tricky.

I do hope that Ilja will eventually regain access to their money and property and this resolves peacefully, but the whole thing is a bit unsettling.

  1. Ja puisis no apgrozības maksa nodokļus tad lai policija iet dirst. Cilvēks **no tīra gaisa** taisa pienesumu valsts budžetam.

  2. It’s funny how there are a bunch of other crooks clearly doing shady shit, but this dude gets hit.. I don’t know the full story anyways, so hard to comment on what’s what. In Latvia, the victim very often turns out to be the criminal and vice versa.

  3. etherscan shows strong indications of wash trading. I know digital artists in Latvia who have made millions and they’ve never run into these kind of issues. Either he did something shady or somebody at VP wants a big cut to stop the freezing order.

  4. This is the first time I hear about this. So Thank You for spreading the word!
