Locals stop construction of footpath near primary school, forcing children to walk on the road so as not to inconvenience motorists.

  1. On a slightly different note it’s completely normalised, parking your car on a footpath and forcing pedestrians onto the road. We give such reverence to the car in Ireland. So annoying. Having a child in a pram is a nightmare having to go on the road all the time.

  2. The locals are complaining about the footpath being installed, as it will make the bridge into a single lane. Am I reading that right?

I’m assuming the children mentioned are currently walking across a two lane bridge with no footpath then?

What exactly is the protest about?

  3. > There was concern locally on the narrowing of bridge

The bridge isn’t being narrowed, the space dedicated to vehicles is being reduced to increase safety for more vulnerable road users.

  4. I mean sure, I did find single lane bridges annoying at first, but got used to them pretty quickly.

But safety should always be above convenience?

On another note, they could have made bridge wider in the first place to avoid problems like this all together… But no, we refuse to think in advance.

  5. I’m normally not one to advocate violence but I strongly feel someone should egg these peoples houses. Repeatedly and persistently, as the article states.

  6. A separate foot bridge would be a better.

looking at the bridge on google maps l, it would seem that the bridge is super narrow anyway and it’s steep enough to have a blind spot before you crest, meaning it would be dangerous if built according to the plan.

  7. Motorists have been so privileged for so long that even conceding a sliver of ‘their’ road or time causes them to throw tantrums. And you just know if one of them had been hit by a car whilst protesting

  8. It’s kind of a tiny bridge, and right in the middle of the village, and looking on streetview, there seems to be a perfect spot for a pedestrian bridge next to it, wouldn’t cost much more than a footpath. I’m betting that’s what these protestors want built instead, so the best of both worlds and not fuck up traffic in their village. But I get it, its reddit kids, so fuckcars have arrived.

  9. Absolutely shit title.

The road is barely wide enough to fit two cars. They would effectively make the road one way which isn’t reasonable if it’s a popular street.

The real scandal here is the location chosen for the school. It doesn’t have proper access to safe infrastructure. We’ve all seen it before, schools built in small roads with no parking or proper drop-off/pick-up zones.
