Two aggressive dogs attack a hiker in Meerbeek and kill his dog

  1. Isn’t it long overdue to put a ban on certain breeds? The often used excuse of “mine is such a good boy and doesn’t bite” is bullshit, they’re still animals with unpredictable behaviour.

I’ve also never seen anyone with a dangerous breed, who is’t at least a bit *marginaal*, to be frank.

  2. Different dogs, multiple times according to the article, same owner, same issues. The dogs aren’t the problem in that case I think. Let’s be cruel for a moment, but putting the owner asleep would have been a better solution in the long run so this can’t happen again.

In my neighborhood there is also a dog who goes for a walk with the owner every day. If that dog gets loose somehow, it will only be because of the size and strength of such dog compared to the owner’s strength which is clearly no match. One wrong movement of someone panicking and that dog could bite as well, no matter how a good boy it is.

Even small dogs such as chihuahua’s can be aggressive (looking at you, my auntie’s 4 ankle biters who hide under your seat or table to attack everyone who enters the room). The difference is when a big dog bites, it’s causing serious injuries (or worse) compared to others hence why some breeds come in the media and others just bite your ankles without big consequences and media attention.

Stop discussing about banning a breed, start educating people about raising pets. Also, make pets not that easy to buy like it is now. Everyone can get any kind of dog without a problem until the problem occurs later on. Same as with kids, having them is one thing, being able to raise them properly, correct their behavior when needed and give them the much needed time and attention they need is another thing.

  3. I don’t know. Everytime you see a herder dog herd it’s because the breed and its instincts.

See a pointing dog point at a picture of a duck in the store it’s the breed and its instincts.

See a dog bread to kill things start to be aggressive and kill things. Ah it must be the owner only…

At some point we have to realise that yes, bad owners are horrible and shouldn’t be owners, but we literally breed these instincts into the dogs.

  4. I have to admit a lot of Belgians have no idea how to train their dogs. Getting breeds for sheep herding, for instance, and keeping it in their apartment or their tiny backyard thinking “that’s nature”. “Idiot it’s an Australian sheepdog. Your backyard is smaller than its personal space.”

  5. I really think people who let their dogs run loose, should be charged with assault/battery. I’ve been victem several times by dogs that have broken out:

    – First time when I was 16yo and alone on the street by a mechelaar. Several stiches and treatements, owners tracked down, denied everything and got away with it.

    – Second time when I was 35yo and alone running by two mechelaars. Had to go into recovery, owners tracked down, their insurance paid medical treatment and they got a warning (and appearantly this wasn’t the first time).

    – Thrid time while defending my 1yo and 5yo in the woods from an abandoned(?) labrador (which are supposed to be a docile breed?). No severe injuries, owners never found – unregistered.

  6. These discussions are like the Belgian gun debate: it’s not the dog, it’s the owner! It’s perfectly safe for a responsible owner to have breed X.

Feels a lot like: guns don’t kill, people do. I store my guns perfectly safe in a gun safe and know how to handle them. It’s the other idiots that shoot people!

  7. Is your dog friendly?

Yes, my dog is very friendly

Aw he just bit me !

    That’s not my dog

  8. Went to a B&B with the kids a few weeks ago. They had a dog. “Very good dog, wouldn’t hurt a fly,” they said. Until my kid wanted to play with the dog, then all of a sudden it was “Don’t take his ball, he’ll bite you.” Some dog owners man…

Never trust a dog you don’t know, and be very wary of the ones you do!

  9. This case is verry much an owner problem, not a dog problem. These dogs are held as guard dogs. They are kept to attack. The owner knows no shame as there have been many incidents before. Unfortunately an innocent dog died this time. Hope it ends here but money and influence has kept the owner out of trouble before.

  10. Time to ban large breeds or introduce dog licenses. People can’t train them well enough, and even though small dogs can attack someone as well, they probably won’t kill a human

  11. I’ve been noticing that once I’m hiking outside of Brussels (and of the flemish parts of the sonian forest), the very poorly trained dogs are suddenly present and start to be an issue.

It’s mostly noticeable in the flemish and wallons boonies. I’ve had a few of bad experiences with poorly trained dogs while walking mine.

Of course when you try to tell the owners that their dog absolutely should not be off leash after noticing their dangerous behaviour they pretend nothing happened or straight up ignore me.

You’d think that when you see your own pet attempt to attack another pet or straight up do it, you’d be shocked and would be sorry but no those people are so ignorant and disgusting.
