Hmm, I don’t think this idea is a good one. The weapons are French and should stay that way. Introducing German taxpayer money could come with caveats from a future German government, of course.
>Asked whether his proposal would give Berlin a say on using nuclear weapons, the former conservative minister said France and Germany would have to come to an agreement as neighbours and NATO partners.
I would be really surprised and unhappy if the french army allowed that to happen.
Or the Germans can develop their own nuke and call it Das Boom!
Isn’t the french nuclear program something akin to national pride? So I highly doubt that they would agree to that. And since this comes from Schaeuble I am pretty sure this is not because he thinks Germany should be generous.
I suspect that he thinks that helping the French government financing their nuclear program would open some of their military funding up for their conventional army. Which would in turn strengthen the german army in case of a war.
So if this really happens, it would be a clear sign that some real shit is highly likely going to happen.
That’s an old French proposal. Basically we pay for part of their arsenal and the French share some of their big booms with us. It got shot down before because such a treaty already exists with the us. So yes Germany actually would have e access to nuclear weapons in times of war already
What about Germany funding the increase of production facilities of conventional equipment instead. If we just settle for the “best”of what we currently can make and then in more sufficient numbers. So Eurofighter, Rafale, Leopard II A7, PnzrHW2000, Ceasar etc etc..and take the lead in financing tomorrows equipment (FCAS, new MBT). So in that way take of some conventional financial pressure away from France which gives more breathing space for France to dedicate itself a bit more towards nuclear arms.
Thats the best solution for the military aspect, standardization and specialization.
And is does not even has to be only military orientated. Look how the economy suffers from chip shortages. Wait until something happens with Taiwan..
Realism dictates that there is the national and economic aspect. Who build what and who says what happens…very important surely..but maybe less important now??
Edit: and i am not advocating that Germany becomes the ATM of Europe, just to better focus each countries (financial) efforts on where they are the most successful based on needs and specialization.
Nukes should have never been ruled out at the outset. And it s probably how Russia s continuing escalation will be ended
Just to be clear: Schäuble is a prominent member of the CDU. Merkel’s party which lead Germany’s government for 16 years. SIXTEEN YEARS! Every time one of them comes out and talks about what should be done the only answer can be why they have not done it while they were in power.
There’s one thing that France is very stubborn about : its military sovereignty, so I dont expect us to even consider taking the money if it means surrendering a bit of control over the arsenal.
But who knows, maybe the future will be surprising
What if they come under EU ownership?
Did the French even ask for this
Ah yes and we should also give our seat at the UN to Germany…
At beggining of week Polish party asked germans to lend us nuclear power plants.
Now germans ask French to lend nuclear weapons.
Here in Greece we have a saying that goes like “A bad dog will never die”.
