> A recent survey by health charity ASH suggests nearly a third of 16 and 17-year-olds have tried vaping, and 14% are currently vapers. Among 11-17-year-olds, 7% are vaping – up from 4% in 2020.
Vape products and sellers need to be urgently addressed, this is a huge problem. How many decades has it taken to shrink the numbers of smokers, and here we have vapes quickly turning things back the other way. Vapes are a great resource for helping existing smokers move away from more harmful cigarettes but the industry sees that as secondary, their main target area for growth is youngsters as this article explains.
1 in 7 16/17 year olds admit they are a regular vaper. 1 in 5 teachers have found 11 year old students with vapes in the last year. This is seriously worrying, vapes are creating a new generation of addicts. Sure there is no tobacco which is a relief, but it is still creating addiction for addictions sake.
Disposable vapes need banning outright, just from an environmental standpoint. It’s insane that people are buying devices with rechargeable battery technology that has been specifically manufactured to not be rechargeable.
In terms of popularity with kids, it’s be hard to stop them getting their hands on them entirely if they really want to, but more undercover checks and enforcement are needed.
Vapes are the new cigarettes. I remember back when I was in school in the early 2000s, you could go to most corner shops and they’d be willing to sell you singles for 20p rising to 50p.
Nowadays because of the internet it is much easier to get hold of vapes, because age verification is not a thing.
The simple thing would be to extend tobacco tax and legislation to vapes and e-cigarettes. Make it harder for unlicensed sellers to exist.
Kids will still find a way to get hold of them, but this will help to reduce it
I’m not at all convinced that they are ‘aimed at children’.
I’m pretty sure this is just yet another case of something being colourful and fun looking, which obviously adults aren’t allowed to like in no fun Britain.
I assume they want them to only be available in brown, be unpleasantly sticky and smell like they’ve just been dug out of a bin.
To be clear, I in no way support vaping for anything other than getting people off cigarettes and disposable vapes should be entirely illegal.
