Saw this on r/all. Why is Ireland’s health service so bad when we have a similar per capita spend as Sweden, a fellow high cost of living country?

  1. Whenever someone posts a statement like this on r/Ireland one of the first, and the top response will always be in disagreement. “*Well actually*….”

  2. I don’t think many people argue the HSE is underfunded. We pump a lot of money into healthcare. Sweden has a much higher government revenue per capita due to higher taxes, but as you can see, the health expenditure is similar.

Most people believe the issues in HSE are more structural, and related to management.

  3. It depends on your measure of healthcare. I had a doctor tell me that if you break your arm, or are in need of A&E, you’ll get treated quicker in Sweden. But if you get cancer, you’re much better being in Ireland for treatment. And your unlikely to die for what you’re in A&E for but cancer will kill you. That is probably why your graph shows that life expectancy is higher in Ireland than Sweden despite a worse health service.

  4. … am I really dumb or is anyone else confused as to how health expenditure against life expectancy matches up with Ireland’s health service being bad?

  5. I know two people who work in the HSE. 1 failed his junior cert & the other left before being expelled

  6. Does anyone know of someone who was sacked by the HSE for underperformance? If not, there’s your answer.

  7. Access and waiting can be bad but our healthcare (once you are in it) is excellent and as good as anywhere.

  8. There’s very very few people who can functionally comment on how a country like Sweden’s health service operates.

The graph you used shows Ireland being absolutely in line with Sweden.

We have lots of issues (so does everyone) mainly we’re short on doctors and we spread our resources too think instead of establishing larger centres of excellence but we have lots of strengths too. I had a family member with a very bad cancer diagnosis and the treatment he got was absolutely exceptional. World class treatments delivered by experts. We shouldn’t forget that too.

  9. You can pump as much money as you want into it but if it’s run badly like the HSE is you’ll have a shit service. I’m guessing Sweden pumps similar money in but the people that run it are not a bunch of apes

  10. Seems to be a good return on everywhere with a 80+ LE.
Who’s to say Norway & Switzerland being more expensive still isn’t good value given the cost of living in those nations & the higher wages they get.

And there she stands alone, the richest nation on Earth. Might be better to be ninth richest & look after your citizens instead.

Show me a country with a perfect system that doesn’t bitch about itself.
We have so much to be thankful for & no small part thanks to the EU.
As Bertie said, a lot done, a lot more to do [and Jaysus didn’t he do us all].

  11. The fact Ireland performs well on most of these metrics, makes our claims that we are most oppressed people ever look very suspicious.
