School mindfulness lessons don’t work for teenagers

  1. I reckon can add workplaces to this too.

I arranged for staff to learn the techniques and provided group space for it following a suggestion from our site reps to boost MH.

None of them did any continuation of it at home to help them and the monthly group chats were gossip sessions in the end.

  2. My guess is that it doesn’t work because they’re all a bit awkward and nervous about how they come across. I don’t think I’d benefit in a class environment but certainly do in my own space.

  3. The place I went to had thugs punching holes in the walls and daily fights. How will your mindfulness assist with this endeavour?

  4. So I’ve never found Mindfulness helpful as been pushed to do it multiple times simply because the NHS doesn’t want to pay for anything complicated for mental health.

If you have very mild mental health issues but still maintain a good mindset it can be a good tool but it won’t touch serious issues and won’t do miracles.

Even if it ends up being bollocks for 80% of people, it is at least worth a try in case you do enjoy it but for schools it would probably be better to seek to lower the suffering of students by following the scientific research that shows they do better with a later start and less overloading as that will improve their mental and physical well-being.

  5. They’re probably sitting still thinking they’re meditating. Or trying to force thoughts out of their mind, etc etc. Neither of these is actual meditation.

  6. Probably because the worst place u can think of trying to learn mindfulness would be a class full of teenagers.

Try teaching them when they’re younger.

  7. Well it was originally part of a spiritual practice designed to reveal the true nature of your mind, and following that path can take you through some pretty dark places before you (hopefully) come out the other side with the help of an experienced teacher.

Not really surprising that it doesn’t really work as a quick stress relief tool.

  8. Mindfulness lessons were so boring and useless. Like for the entire year they would talk about GCSEs and how detrimental it would be for us if we didn’t start studying, to try harder and that we were behind schedule by four weeks since the start of year 10. And then for one random ass day they would tell us not to try and not put too much pressure on ourselves.

It was stupid and all they taught us was to breathe deeply which is good but condescending af.
