Why are half the protesters children?
Christ NIMBY’s are a dose. I’m lucky enough to have a house and would have no issue with social housing nearby. People need houses.
Ah yes, the “pull the ladder up and fuck the rest” argument.
Sometimes social housing works great, and sometimes it’s a fucking war zone.
Good, social housing only breathes people who think they entitled to everything for free.
Go to any council estate and look at all the boarded up houses that people have wrecked.
Obviously there’s a housing crisis – and the people most in need should be giving housing first. But I often wonder why social housing isn’t distributed between mixed income brackets, including some at market value. I worked in ‘restricted income’ property management (basically meaning the housing has a cap on yearly income per household) and this worked best when it was mixed levels. When it was singularly social housing with lowest income brackets there was a contempt for the place especially from young residents who often vandalised and destroyed property because they were angry about circumstances and all they saw was poverty every day.
Social housing is badly needed here- but shoving up estates singularly for the lowest income is problematic because it creates an ‘us v them’ mentality on both sides of the fence and leads to stigma and further problems. I live near a new social housing estate and it’s not full because people are worried about the stigma of living there.
>The land backs onto the northern end of the estate and we feel we are going to be clumped in with social housing
Oh heavens forbid! Can’t have the lowly peasants spoiling the local area for homeowners with their presence!
> Local resident Gill Moriarity said ***residents are worried that a social housing scheme there will affect the value of their properties.***
You only really care about the value if you’re planning on selling right? It’s shit like this that makes it harder for the rest of us.
No let the tattooed, smoking, noisy dog owner, rubbish burning, feral kids and neglectful parents that this place lives on giving out about live next door in groups of 100.
What could possibly go wrong.
With plenty of people on the housing list why is there a need to board them up?
Probably because its either going to get wrecked and people can refuse a house 3 times while on the list to get a free house where all repairs or if anything goes wrong will get everything done for them for free by the council.
Wonder would they be objecting if it were an estate of high end houses that will end up with a pair of beamers or mercs in the drive? No probably not.
Yes, unfortunately there are ungrateful cunts that wreck the gaff they get off the council, there are also ones that are incredibly grateful ones that spend their time looking after the gaff they get.
Fuck’em. Only thing I do agree with is the cul de sac aspect, no problem with them objecting to it becoming a through-road if other options are available.
I’m familiar with this. They’re going to be putting the social housing in an apartment block
If I’m reading this correctly there is already a social housing development one side of the estate? And the plan is to build another one on the other side? And possibly a road connecting them through the existing estate?
Ah come on lads, we all know there is a need for housing, but that does seem a bit much, doesn’t it? I wouldn’t be happy if my house was suddenly going to be literally surrounded by social housing, and I have no problem admitting it.
Very few estates are council housing only nowadays, and when they are it’s usually just a few houses. I do understand that, historically, social-only housing has led to ghettoised, underresourced areas and everyone should be keen to avoid that. But houses still need to be built.
And I do emphasise to a point because I know the social housing list is often scammed and given to people who know how to game the system rather than people who need it, but social housing benefits the poor, the disabled, the widowed, and the vulnerable. We need it.
And let’s be truly honest here, when people object to social housing their real concern is travellers moving in, but they can’t come right out and say that.
And they have every right to do so.
If people have lived in a smallish suburban area all their lives. They should have some say in what goes on there. I’d wager that if a social housing estate was proposed beside them. 99% of commentators on here condemning the residents of Ashbourne would themselves object.
It’s like a reverse form of NIMBYism.
Everyone agrees more social housing should be built but very few want it anywhere near them.
Why? Because of totally understandable reasons, there is an increase in well documented antisocial activities, the traffic flow in the area probably wasn’t designed to cope with the extra 100+ cars, the value of pre-existing property massively goes down……etc.
There are valid reasons, people may object to the objections. But that’s a different story.
I am just tired of the holier than thou hypocrisy any time something like this comes up.
One of the reasons councils prefer to renting over building social housing is they don’t have to deal with this crap.
No offence to these people I’m sure they are lovely.
That being said a bit of sympathy goes a long way.
We want houses, just not near ours.
I grew up in a council estate. It churned out some of the nicest, most successful people I know. On the other side it threw out some of the scummiest fucks I have ever met too.
Just like some of the people I know from the good side of town has thrown out some of the nice and successful people I know and some scummy, thieving fucks too.
Like is like a packet of revels, Fuck the coffee flavour.
Crazy how so many of them, going by the photo, don’t seem to be that old exactly, and a load of kids by the looks of it too, but couldn’t give a fuck about any other potential families who could desperately do with a house like they all have
This is why huge build to let blocks are being built.
Because people like this to nuts when the government want to house “undesirables”. So it’s easier to let private companies build the blocks and rent them to the state for 25 years.
We shouldn’t be having estates with only one type of tenant. We should have a proper social housing mix based on the Amsterdam and Vienna models.
For example, in Amsterdam the mix is:
20% low income; 60% middle income; 20% high income.
This results in the prevention of ghettoisation and a lower crime rate than Dublin (yes, not Ashbourne but Amsterdam vs Dublin sources are all I can find).
She’s got some balls saying shit like that in a newspaper
Priti-ism
They just don’t want travelers in their estates.
All for social housing! Who wouldn’t be but please do a better job of making sure the people most in need get the houses.
Ashewood is a kip anyway and most of those living in it are blow ins from finglas and ballymun – some would have said that estate was a total blight on the town. Can fuck right off now moaning about social housing especially after the bailout they got for pyrite from the tax payer bunch of ungrateful fucks
More like Hashbourne
I live in Ashbourne and my Lithuanian best friend’s rent increased so his family had to leave but they couldn’t find any accommodation so he slept in his car for a few days. He now lives in social housing and it’s an absolute godsend I can still have him around
Imagine being willing to be in photograph with a group that’s fighting against houses being built for poor or potentially homeless people. The area has been zoned for housing for some time.
>Ms Moriarity says that residents had been through a lot as they had to have their homes remediated because of problems with pyrite.
Does this mean we paid for their homes as well?
Absolutely the biggest fuck off to them. Literally prioritising the value of their house over the wellbeing of the country. They are the scum, not the people moving into social housing.
I wasn’t aware Co.Councils we’re purchasing land for social housing. Does anyone know how much they’re paying for it? Who’s going to build the homes? The council? Just curious.
So they try to build houses- not soon enough
They actually do build houses – not good enough
I live in a private estate with several social houses and there’s never been an issue, they make it look like a suburb in dalkey with all the flash new cars they are able to buy by not paying for their houses.
Interesting lifestyle choice.
Imagine the crap those parents have filled those children’s heads with about “people who live in social houses”.
Ngl. I didn’t bat an eyelid when they went up near us but two years later some of the residents have certainly made their presence known.
NIMBY
Greedy bunch of unsympathetic wankers. Majority of the kids in this photo will be immigrated or living with their parents until their 40.
