Down’s syndrome campaigner fights abortion ruling

  1. Fucking loathsome people putting their narcissism above other people’s rights to make life-defining decisions for themselves.

Trying to restrict women’s choice to massage their own self-esteem is some brazen shit.

  2. This is stupid. Yet another person telling someone else what they can or cannot do with their own body and future. Lovely.

As if the world wasn’t absolutely shit already, lets make it worse.

Look forward to a future of increasing disabilities and mental health problems. Can’t wait. /s

  3. From the article:

*Mr Coppel said: “In modern days, Down’s syndrome is not a barrier to living a happy and fulfilled existence as Heidi and Aidan demonstrate.”*

This is extremely dangerous to say and misleading. Down’s affects people very differently and sure, some people who suffer from the condition can live relatively normal lives but that’s the minority. In the vast majority of cases they require constant support which is not always available.

There is no reason whatsoever anyone should have a say in a woman’s decision to terminate a pregnancy. Support should be available, but it is ultimately their decision.

  4. Look, as a person with disabilities that are far milder I would support my conditions being reasons to terminate throughout the entire 9 months if they could detect them while in the womb.

Our government makes me suffer and plays subtle eugenics by punishing me for dating which deterred me having a child when I used to want one anyway.

The burden on parents to raise a disabled child is hard and it isn’t easy to adequately raise a child anyway. Knowing the child will never grow up to have an easy life and that when you die you may potentially need to ensure someone is ready to take over being a carer because the facilities for disabled people outright torture them with violence and neglect.

Society doesn’t respect me as a disabled person. If you want to bring protection for disabled fetuses then you need to overhaul the DWP, improve Social Care funding, better fund the NHS in all tiers. Without those you’re setting up a fetus to turn into a human that suffers without support.

  5. Good.

The argument for her campaign is a simple one.

The abortion limit of 24 weeks (amongst the most generous and easily accessed in the world) should apply equally to all.

The exceptions in law are if a late term abortion is needed to save the mother’s life, prevent serious injury, or if the unborn child is so severely disabled that it is not possible to live for very long. A child having DS fits into the latter category but it should not.

When the law was first written (1967), the disabled were not full members of society. In many ways they still aren’t, this is one of them. Back in 1967 the life expectancy for a child with DS was less than 15 iirc. Now it’s 65.

The idea that all DS people are eligible for abortion at any stage is absolutely ableist and ridiculous. There is no argument for it, though I’m happy to hear them.

It’s eugenics. Yes it effects very few people, but it does matter how we treat minority groups.

  6. Other women’s bodily autonomy isn’t about you.

One individual’s insecurities and sense of self-worth would be a terrible reason to change the law.

  7. Considering I grew up in a disabled community and most of the people in it with DS were *not* functionally independent (relied on parents, siblings, etcetera for basic tasks) I don’t really have an issue with the current abortion laws.

Babies are tough enough and most people cannot cope with them, hell, those who think they can *still cannot cope*. Now imagine it’s a severely disabled child? I wouldn’t want to wish that on my worst enemy.

Poor quality of life for the kid and the parents, or, as others are saying “put them for adoption” .. any of you jokers actually seen the system? It’s fucking horrific. Double that for the severely disabled.

  8. Down Syndrome is a negative genetic defect that makes you look and think abnormal, tons of other genetic defects that makes you susceptible to all sorts of conditions and diseases. Why on earth would we want more people with Down Syndrome around?
