Free contraception for women aged 17 to 25 to be rolled out by September

  1. This is very positive, but I’d love to see the same for men. I know you can get free condoms in college, but it should be freely accessible to everyone. Condoms aren’t cheap.

  2. I wonder how much of an impact this will have on long term relationships. Hormonal contraception can mess with your body in many ways but the lesser known ways tend to have some long term effects.

For example it can apparently mess with your sense of smell or at least your sense of smell with regard to other people. Women often cant tell the natural scent of their partner. This can result in issues down the line because obviously she cant stay on the pill forever and as soon as she does stop suddenly the smellof her partner may become extremely offensive to her ensuring a lack oc close contact and affection that alone can ruin a relationship. Its also a signifier of sometimes serious incompatibility though thats much harder to quantify and detail possibilities.

Basically women should know to go off the pill if theyre on it before they marry their lad and make sure she isnt repulsed by his stench.

  3. I’m so glad I’m over the age of 25 and don’t have any reproductive organs or a sex drive. It’s handy that they all just evaporate at that age.

  4. Pharmacist here. The HSE or government haven’t issued one single bit of information about how this scheme is to be administered. I heard about it on Twitter first. Only in Ireland.

  5. Really happy about this, I thought when it was initially announced it was gonna happen that it would just be the literal contraception that will be free, didn’t realise it included going to the GP to get the prescription/discuss options. Just need it for over 25’s soon as well

  6. Excellent news.
Lets hope the sex equivilant of the cannabis risk alliance doesnt try and interfere with common sense like this.

  7. This is such great news but I can’t understand the comments of people going but what about mens contraception? Tbf the onus of buying condoms isn’t just on you. I was on the pill 7 years and still bought condoms, I’m now on the bar and if I was single would still be using condoms so I’d be paying for both. A vasectomy is a permanent solution not everyone wants to go that far plus its a surgery why would that be covered. Compared to paying for the implant which lasts 3-5 years, the IUD another long form of contraception, the pill, the patch etc etc. Like women all over the place are paying crazy money for contraception because we need to, we’ve been taught from puberty sort it out or you get pregnant that’s on you. Lads it’s not about us getting something and ye being left out it’s progress, calm down. It’s just like sometimes anything positive for women you’ve a man in thr corner going but what about the men!!

  8. Contraceptions are also important for preventing ovarian cysts, regulating period pain and relieving endometriosis symptoms – just to add to how beneficial this is outside of strictly being related to protected sex.

Edit: To clarify, I was speaking on behalf of the instances in which these are prescribed with proper care toward the person’s medical history and it is evaluated that the individual is suited towards the usage of the specific contraception. There are definite drawbacks, in terms of the level to which contraception can be provided without sufficient review of cases, because there is a reality that contraception can be harmful rather than beneficial in terms of helping reproductive health. Thank you to the replies for pointing out, and apologies to not have encompassed the negatives alongside the positives contraception can offer too.

  9. Aw I’m delighted but could REALLY have done with this ten years ago when I was absolutely broke spending a fortune on the pill.

  10. Good, but I wish it was free for all women over 17 and not capped at 25. I spend €200+ a year on GP visits and prescriptions and that’s getting the generic alternative and having to buy in bulk to get the discount

  11. This is great and all, but 17 shouldn’t be the minimum age, it should be younger. Let’s face it, kids are having sex whether we like it or not, whether the law says they can or can’t. Younger girls need this too, and should have it just as much as a 25 year old. Plus, there other reasons a girl may take the pill (I e. For hormone balancing, acne, period regulation), so this is about girls healthcare, not just whether they get pregnant or not !!

  12. This is great. It’s taken so long! In the nineties it was hard to imagine we’d ever have free contraception and legal abortion here.

  13. Amazing news! In all honesty, with all the shitshow going on in America, and despite our problems here, we need to remember and be thankful that we live in Ireland.

  14. I’m a pharmacist myself. While I’m very happy about this being implemented, we still have ZERO GUIDANCE on how this will work. Nobody has contacted us regarding the issue to create guidelines. I hope this is done as soon as possible, but as usual, we will be the last ones knowing

  15. Ireland needs to step further into the 21st century now and have sexual health clinics. Walk in and grab your contraception after a quick consultation and go.

  16. I live in Navan, co,Meath, there’s a sec shop Mandy’s delights and she’s been offering free condone to teens since pre Covid, no questions, no embarrassment. I think this is amazing

  17. Heavily weighted towards contraception that influences hormones and risks blood clots.

It’s not right to put the onus/risk on women like that tbh. Condoms should be included in this, if they aren’t.
