Anecdotal but I’m in my early 30s and this year alone I know of 3 separate friends and acquaintances who have had to move back into their parents houses on familial mates-rates rent for the spare room because of the cost of living.
These are people in the prime of their lives doing non-flashy but pretty normal office jobs for their 37.5 hours a week who, on the same sorts of jobs only a few short years ago were going out, spending their “fun money” each month and generally enjoying being a millennial person. And now they are one good family away from literally staring down the barrel of homelessness.
I genuinely don’t know how those on modest incomes, without such family support networks, are going to cope with this.
Then lower the price cap?!? Energy companies are making biiig ££££ and apparently offgem are jist gonna let em do it more
That’s fucked. So many people won’t be able to cope financially.
I can’t help but feel we knew this. These small increments makes the overa all price hike seem less so. We kind of normalised to the last months fucking and are ready to take that dick again. Sedated and passive.
Winter is going to be fun…
Odd circle innit since we gotta keep paying to heat pools cuz the price keeps going up.
Every single person should just cancel their Direct Debits lol
Av’abit of that you greedy cunts.
I was **extremely** fortunate that I was able to front-load my old PAYG meter with a significant amount of credit the day before the April 1st price hike, so I’ve been protected from that hike due to the way the machine works. Unfortunately said credit will run out by the end of the week so I’ll move over to the April 1st rates – It’s going to be a struggle even with the incoming support from the Government. To know it’s going to rise again later in the year, and likely again in 2023 is significantly worrying.
What a surprise.
Great. Keeping warm and clean is now a privilege reserved for the middle and upper classes.
Is this 1722 or 2022?
_Fix the fucking energy purchasing system_
This is not a hard conundrum. Most power is dirt cheap but the last one in the door sets the price everyone gets. It’s a bullshit system and needs to stop.
It was gamble, and a risky one at that, but it paid off.
I know I’m going to be stung when it comes to renewing though.
Build more nuclear reactors, build hundreds of reactors, build so many reactors that energy bills are around £5 a month.
Its scaring us too. We work for the NHS and we are struggling. We haven’t got high paid jobs. Both work in local surgeries. I in a dispensary and my wife if Pharmacy tech. We came to the horrible decision to sell up and downsize. We only live in a small 2 bed bungalow and yet SSE calim we are using around 300quid a month on electric (we don’t have gas heating and our storage heaters have been switched off for nearly 3yrs now). We had 3 new metres, check metre and a smart metre (which didn’t work) installed.
we reley on the odd small convection heater through winter. Though as its summer and we haven’t had them on since March. But still they claim we use 300 to 400 a month. We tried the ombudsman and they are trying to sort it out. But its not looking good. We have lived here 3rlyrs and already we owe them 4.5k despite paying 250quid a month. We are dreading this price rise and hoping we can sell up before it kicks in so we can pay them off and have a cheaper lifestyle. I honestly think they are money grabbing dickheads.
SSE lately also closed there complaints dept so now you have to talk to someone who doesn’t understand what the issue is or won’t action it. Drives us insane.
So they announced they will be giving us £400 off our bill and now the price cap is going raise an extra ~£400 from what they originally predicted? They can piss off honestly
I’m on 45k a year, live in a one bedroom flat, live pretty frugally and I am starting to struggle to pay for everything without hitting 0 on my monthly balance.
How on earth the government expects people to pay this is astonishing to me.
How.the.fuck do they expect people to be able to afford it. Like really, how.the.fuck
Good job you made it so we could have more frequent price cap rises then. Now they’re also bigger than expected. While profits hit record highs continually.
Literally daylight robbery. I can usually devil’s advocate any idea of this price increase, but I can’t do it here. If its that bad go dip back into Russian oil or work a deal with Ukraine.
Anyone struggling now, which for sure is anyone on 25K or less will be destroyed if bills go up by more than the ridiculous amount already predicted. That will be on top of continuing rises in food and other essentials.
People will simply not pay the bills because they are unable to. The whole energy supply system could collapse.
We have done, we have had the ombudsman on the case for nearly a year. They sided with SSE for a large part of it. Though they did say they can’t charge us for the first year as they estimated it. Het they haven’t reduced our bill and now we found out yesterday SSE claim they can’t find the reading for that year. So its got a little complex and also stupid.
Great news to hear, following my landlord emailing me today putting my rent up because “his costs are going up”.
I don’t understand how people are going to be able to pay this. What is the end game? Push more people into energy poverty? Aside from how awful that is anyway, doesn’t it mean the energy companies will be outpricing their customers and will therefore lose them?
Genuinely gets to a point where you wonder whether or not it matters if you default on everything.
I would know, because it happened to me in 2008.
Totally disgusting! The greed of the wealthy few will kill us all! Start of the apocalypse. Nothing much to live for now anyway in this country.
Do something about it then?
Guess I wont be paying my energy bill then. This government deserves a riot for how its left our country and its infastructure completely exposed to the worlds turmoil. Least France has control of its own energy.

Current expectations for the upcoming earnings season is that YoY the average earnings increase of an S&P 500 company will be around 5%
Apart from energy companies, which are expected to have increased their profits by 55%.
Time to do a Sri Lanka
Make energy public!! Privatisation no longer works!
we got our electic and gas bill for last month through the other day. month before was 180 total, this month its nearly £400, there excuse was “you used more” but there has been no changes. theres nothing we can do about it and were now £200 down this month. It all feels like a massive scam that we cant do anything about. people are gunna start getting desperate and angry soon. if they dont this country has no hope.
Then nationalise energy and subsidise it.
Why are we putting profit over people time and time again?
If energy bills keep rising like this more and more people will be destitute and they will have less money to spend elsewhere, fucking over our economy even further.
Was on the cards when ‘they’ saw that people were coughing up the extra revenue for them.
Exactly the same will happen with petrol and diesel as they can basically do what they like all the time the governments are benefiting from the extra tax raised.
A rope and a short drop for many feel like the only worth while thing to do this coming winter.
Whats the point? you worked for years, built up savings to try for a comfortable life and some company just goes? sorry. into the gutter with you..
You work all week to… sit at home in a cold house, to wait for the next working week?
Some life. i’d rather not..
Great! keeps the carbon footprint down. The science is settled! /s
If we made the engery industry public and used the collective bargaining power of the govenment to bring the cost of energy now and sell it at near cost to the public. Would this lower the price of energy for consumers?
Like I’m not for making everything public, you need competition to make nice stuff.
But for energy everyone needs it and it’s the same from all suppliers, like, have I got somthing wrong here? Wouldn’t the govenment owning the industry make it cheaper?
Thankfully I got 20kw solar fitted when gov were doing grants a few years ago, for 7 months a year my bill is basically nothing . Heck in dead of winter the standing charge makes up a huge chunk of my bill. We NEED push home solar as much as possible, when demand on grid goes down, the price will too.
The constant bending over is killing my back.
I wonder if there’s gonna be some kind of emergency vaseline payment.
Lol, I use basically no electricity right now (heat water once a week) and my bills are as high as they were in the winter a few years ago.

So glad I fixed at the back end of last year.
It was gamble, and a risky one at that, but it paid off.
