A strategically important town in Belgium, Ypres was the site of 5 major battles during World War I. Around 300,000 British, Commonwealth soldiers were killed in these battles, the Memorial was to commemorate the unknown soldiers, as well as some of the prominent officers.

Every evening a Last Post ceremony is held at Menin Gate, where buglers play the Last Post in honor of all the Allied soldiers who had fought to defend Belgium during WWI. Quite a moving tune.

  1. I visited it 3 times. And one time there were native canadian dancers who came to remember their fallen ancestors. They were using hoops and stuff…and it was really impressive. I didnt knew so many native canadians fought in the commenwealth of canada armed forces in ww1.
