Podge & Rodge: a scare at bedtime. My dad had the first two seasons on VHS. The Plughole episode used to terrify me as a kid. I have the entire series on DVD. Might do an episode ranking at one point. What was your opinion on this piece of Irish culture?

  1. Remember being in bed watching it after Fr Ted? I would have been 12 or 13 at the time and it used to freak the fuck out of me

  2. Used to love it, I always remember one of them painting his nails so that when he was having a wank it looked like girls hand, the brother wanted a lend of his hand by the end of the episode.

  3. I think it ran a bit too long, but it was unusually great for RTE.

The episodes were a good mix of urban legends and genuinely creative weird horror short stories, the gags were great, and the details in the enactments were gas.

Fester & Ailin had nothing but hits, too.

  4. Have to admit I didn’t like it much. It had moments which made me burst out laughing sure enough (are yeh makin the tea) but mostly it made me think of smartarses in the pub with stupid in-jokes, congratulating themselves on being smart enough to laugh at the stupidity of their own humour. I hate saying that, given how much I love Zig & Zag.

Having said all that, it was original and unapologetic and a bit subversive, which makes it all the stranger that RTE put it on the air.

  5. “Who’s the Shitehawke now?”

    “You’re a Shitehawke!”

Great episode, we don’t use the word Shithawke enough anymore imo. I think I’ll use it a lot today. I’ve a lot of work meetings.

  6. I cannot ask anyone in my family if they are ‘making the tea’ without out it degenerating into a long back and forth “are ya making the tea?”, “no”. “are ya making the tea?”, “no”. “are ya making the tea?”, “no”. “are ya making the tea?…. “no”.

    So yeah… fuckin iconic.

  7. Have the full series along with an old ps2 hidden away somewhere for when the WiFi goes and we need entertainment. Cant wait until it goes again.

  8. My Father loved the first 2 seasons, he had the slippers, the hot water bottle cover, the bottle opener which still works!

Always raises a chuckle when it sputters forth it’s insults as he’s having a beer.

This was genius comedy. And they never should have tried to relaunch
