These Leo fan club post are weird
Fine Gael have Stockholm Syndrome, it is known.
Pure whataboutery.
If someone thinks that IRA murders in the past were OK, let them say that, but don’t let them hide behind “but what about these other guys?”
I’m allowed say that the UVF were murdering pricks without commenting on ETA.
Me saying the UVF were murdering pricks is enough. Because its true.
And anyone is entitled to say that the IRA blew innocent women and children to bits. Albeit that *some people* don’t like hearing it.
Loyalist terror groups aren’t running for seats in the Dail
If you Google Leo and Bloody Sunday you’ll see that he put out a statement on the 50 year anniversary.
there was that time he tried commemorating the black and tans too, its almost as those he feels little connection to his irish past…
Fine Gael and the DUP have more in common than with any regular people.
Rent free.
I’m a republican and no fan of Leo or FG but this is a bit much.
No mention of the follow up tweet:
>*”We remember the victims and survivors today and recommit ourselves to ensuring that political violence should never return to our island.”*
Or [this statement](https://www.finegael.ie/statement-by-tanaiste-and-fine-gael-leader-leo-varadkar/) from last January:
>*“Today we remember the 14 innocent people who were killed in Derry 50 years ago on Bloody Sunday.*
>*“The events of that day cast a long shadow over the city and the country that many are still dealing with today.*
>*“We salute the courage and perseverance of the victims and their families who have campaigned tirelessly for justice and who continue to do so today.*
>*“Their tenacity serves as an example to other Troubles-related victims to never give up the fight for justice.*
>*“We pledge to honour the memory of those who died on Bloody Sunday by standing with all victims of the Troubles and continuing to work for permanent peace on our shared island.”*
Also, even the IRA and Sinn Féin at the time and since won’t stand over this particular atrocity.
I personally feel it’s the responsibility of a leader to call out his/hers own countries mistakes rather than point the finger
It’s the only way we move forward
Can’t wait to see to back of that arrogant clown
Leave this shit at the door please.
There’s enough whattabouttery in the North – we don’t need it down here.
He’s respectfully acknowledging the many victims of a horrible event that took place on our island.
It’s the sort of thing we need from politicians in the south to help build a joint future for all communities.
I can’t see why anyone would have a problem with this.
What a desperate, pathetic, embarrassing thread.
If FG ran in the north they’d be unionists.
The worst part of when SF get into power will be the gobshites like this guy.
Not to mention how they react when SF don’t turn out to be the all glorious guides to utopia that people like them seem to think they are.
Please note: Not a FF or FG fan either, not making any comment on what SF will actually do in power. Only pointing out the reality that its not going to go as smoothly as the more hardcore of their supporters appear to believe it will.
They have to do it or they acknowledge they were borderline vassals to the British. They ignore or denigrate the anti British-empire part of the Irish struggle because it makes them uncomfortable.
The British secret agencies were doing all sorts of heinous shit that has never been made fully public or is hinted at in niche books that very few read.
The real breaking point for me was commemorating the RIC. The group that took part in evictions and were an tool of the British empire. No matter how you look at it.
He’s a one trick pony. He never talks about the north unless it suits him to somehow stick a dagger to Sinn Féin or bang on about what the RA done.
There’s wiser out eating grass in the fields than that prick
What kind of whataboutusm bullshit is this?
As a northern catholic I can happily say the IRA were murdering scumbags, they are no different than the other murderous dogs that made life hell for the people who lived through it. I’m sick and fuckig tired of southerners trying to play defence for them or pull this kind of whataboutism bullshit. Terrorism is fucking wrong no matter who does it, stop trying to inflame tensions when it doesnt effect you.
I don’t like the man as much as the next but this is just pure bullshit. If Twitter is your basis for all political events then please just shut up with this wharraboutism.
Ah fuck off
It’s the 50th anniversary of Bloody Friday. One of the worst atrocities during the Troubles in terms of those killed and injured
This post is just a bit depressing on how warped certain people are
It’s his way of having a go at SF.. nothing more.
He’s a prick
Leo is not cataloguing injustices throughout the world, he is pointing out Sinn Fein are not fit for government, which they are not.
I remember the 14 people killed in Derry on bloody Sunday, and I also remember my baby daughter’s beloved father, abducted by the IRA on his way home from work, tortured and shot in the head. Body dumped in a ditch to be found three days later.
No religion or political belief has the monopoly on pain.
The pain of others is the same as the pain I feel. No more, no less.
Let’s not divide it up. Support each other.
My daughter who lost her father to the IRA married a Catholic man whose family were IRA activists and supporters. We try to understand and love each other. That is what will heal us. I love my son in law. I know he loves me. This is what will take us into the future.
It’s not a competition, you can condemn one group in isolation, the IRA were horrid animal scum. There’s not buts.
Being honest this post is pathetic.
The British did terrible things, the IRA did terrible things, the troubles were a terrible time.
Can people not just move past being in support of one side or the other and see the whole situation as historical.
Lieo, the West Brit.
F#£k Varadkar, the greatest pox on this country. Political point scoring and that’s it, he doesn’t care about anything but his image and trying to link modern day (majoritively) southern SF with the IRA in 1972. Most, if not all SF TD’s and activists were children or weren’t even born in 1972!
R/Ireland exposing itself as being full of middles class techies from the Pale yet again.
I’m 28 years old and the Troubles are completely irrelevant to me politically. It was a violent terrorist campaign against a brutal occupying force. The realities are the realities, there. If there was another major party with a platform as positive as SF, we could have this conversation, but there isn’t, and if I have to go through my thirties under the same FF/FG centre-right economic death spiral, I’ll fucking kill myself. Sorry.
OP has a general history of “woe is me” and smells of a Facebook boomer whore.
That’s it, I’m done with r/Ireland. It’s been a long time, sad in a way. But this place is a sewer.
And probably no tweets about the IRA’s 20 car bombs in Belfast fifty years ago.
