The serotonin theory of depression: a systematic umbrella review of the evidence

  1. ‘Our comprehensive review of the major strands of research on serotonin shows there is no convincing evidence that depression is associated with, or caused by, lower serotonin concentrations or activity. Most studies found no evidence of reduced serotonin activity in people with depression compared to people without’

  2. I find this research very interesting. I have been prescribed SSRI class drug for depression and the shift from “despair” to “neutral” was very distinct and happened effectively over two days. It wasn’t a placebo effect or in my head only, I could really feel the biochemical aspect of it, it’s hard to describe.

I guess that “serotonin levels don’t seem to cause deppression” and “SSRI drugs are effective against depression” statements are not mutually exclusive if there are third factors or more complexity.

  3. I have been on a SSRI for 6 days now and still feel fucking miserable. Starting to have my doubts about them…
