Taoiseach warns Irish people are more genetically susceptible to skin cancer

  1. Which is true. We have comparatively speaking much lower levels of melanin, as is exemplified by the fact that half of us turn pink as a peony after 10 minutes in the sun.

Enjoy the sun by all means as we don’t see too much of it, but do so sensibly.

  2. “Hey, look over here! This grass is green!”

I’m struggling to find something any more obvious to Irish or Scottish people than the fact that pale skin is more susceptible to damage from the sun…

  3. I’m looking forward to the nut jobs deciding his wrong and going out in the Sun getting sunburnt. Than blaming chemtrails for getting burnt.

  4. Look, it’s as obvious as can be to those of us with a lick of sense. But I know a few people, and there are people in this sub, who have argued that all you need is to go out and build up a “base tan” or that sun cream is actually more harmful than the suns rays.

He’s not saying this for the people who already know you should be wearing a bit of SPF when you’re out in the sun. It’s the idiots he’s talking to here.

  5. Well, ye, paler people in general, not just Irish.

    Ginger hair adds extra risk.

This has been known for ages now.

  6. I was out with my boyfriend last Saturday. We were sitting in the bright sunlight and he was commenting on how pale my skin was, it was literally white in the sun. I told him that this is one of the reasons why I wear factor 50 suncream, and I pointed to my mole ridden arms for the other reason why I wear it. Have not gotten seriously burned in over a decade but I still am paranoid that one of these moles will turn funny. Thankfully cancer death rates seem to be dropping due to awareness.

  7. Yeah, then they emigrate (like my ma) and those genetics end up making people like me, her son, dress like a colonial American woman at the beach

  8. Hold on….the palest people on earth also have a high risk of a disease known to be a greater threat to people with lower levels of dermal melanin? I am truly shocked.
