How the mortgage-free majority squeezed out first-time buyers

  1. The causes of this issue are not generational – that’s what the politicians want to divide the nation and want you to think and the media play along as they all have vested interests.

Just because older people have paid off their mortgage doesn’t mean their screwing the young over. Of course if you’re old you have more money and potentially paid your mortgage – you’ve probably worked for 30+ years to accumulate wealth.

The issue is landlordism, lack of regs, over population in specific areas (i.e look at house prices outside the south east or major cities and you’ll likely be fine).

And the biggest: Lack of quality, affordable house building in areas of high demand. Lack of Hugh rise building in cities until a few years ago and the fecking leasehold bullsnit we have to navigate.

Don’t let this be a culture war issue, this is plain and simple incapable politics and lack of vision for the UK.

  2. I would be curious to know if the number of mortgages includes equity release products like lifetime mortgages (I suspect not).
