Mega-rich Duke accused of fresh plot to ‘bully’ allotment holders off his land

  1. He got his land by his ancestor fighting for it.

… Let him physically fight for it.

    ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!!!

  2. According to locals in Alnwick, The Jook is apparently getting all fretful about the amount of inheritance tax his family will have to shell out when he pops his clogs. Poor bairn.

He has a history of being a twerp.

  3. Isn’t it a matter of land ownership?

Council planning permission is required to build flats but if he doesn’t want allotments surely that is his right if he owns the land?

How he got rich or acquired the land is not relevant.

There is a law surrounding land ownership deeds.

“They hang the man and flog the woman

That steal the goose from off the common,

But let the greater villain loose

That steals the common from the goose.

The law demands that we atone

When we take things we do not own,

But leaves the lords and ladies fine

Who take the things that are yours and mine.”

  5. It’s his land, he can just say no more allotments, get off my land.

The issue is that he can’t get planning permission for flats on that land. And he’s annoyed that the allotment folks are in opposition to the flats, cause they want to keep their allotments.

But he can just kick them off if he wants.

  6. I am actually really in favor of the duke here, we need more housing especially in London. Think it is a much better use of the space then allotments

  7. Everyone is calling for the end of the aristocracy which I’m all for. But before we do that, we have to decide how we handle land ownership. Otherwise places like that will end up in the hands of large corporations out to make a shit ton of money. (See Merlin Entertainment!)

My advice would be, we storm their lands, and then the buildings would be maintained by National Trust or English Heritage, whilst the lands become free to roam. A bit like it is at The Ashridge estate in Bucks.

I don’t want to see another grubby corporate giant cheapening the buildings. They need ownership for maintaining, and should be open for the public, but the grounds need to be available for people to enjoy…. NOT for building on.

  8. Some absolute knee-jerk, reactionary nonsense in this thread.

The current Duke is relative “new money” and this is the third or forth re-creation of the title which was done in the 19th century. Its not as though he is inherited his wealth from 11th century Norman’s.

The allotments are probably not the best use of the land given its location, but that is subjective.

  9. It will all just be in a trust so inheritance tax will be nothing. Feudal systems are only gonna get worse as the wealthy buy more land and property.
