Peckham woman lay undiscovered in flat for two years, inquest told

  1. I can’t even fathom the incompetence of so many people which leads to something like this happening.

There’s a more recent article on BBC about this, where Peabody confirm they’ve apologised to the “family”. What fucking family? The family that had zero contact since at least August 2019 and never thought to check up on her even once?

And here they come crawling out the woodwork.

  2. > Ms Seleoane was last seen alive during a GP visit in August 2019.

    > She had not paid rent since August 2019 but landlord Peabody cut off her gas supply in June 2020, three months after applying for universal credit to cover her rent.

How does a landlord apply for universal credit to cover rent without the tenant’s involvement, if only for means testing? Sounds like another perfect money making scam.

    > The chief executive officer at the time of incident revealed they were trying to reach nine Peabody tenants who they have had no contact from in the last year.

    Riiight…

  3. This is my biggest fear. I can be alone but hate the idea that I could be lonely and isolate in my old age, with no one to even call in on if I need help. It shows how society is fading away as people do not even know their neighbours anymore in many places.

  4. Peabody is my landlord, and to say they are incompetent is an understatement. There was a similar incident in a flat just opposite mine and the police had to break down the door. No one from Peabody knew anything about it, because I asked the estate manager when I saw him and knew nothing about it till they replaced the door. They don’t care about any resident, only the rent. Shady organisation who operate under the false pretence of being a charity.

  5. <There were also two police visits to Lord’s Court within a week in October 2020, where officers were unable to make contact with the resident.

However, a miscommunication by a Met Police controller mistakenly concluded that Ms Seleoane had been seen alive and well – and this was passed on to Peabody.

That controller retired from the Met last year, but would have been recommended for possible disciplinary action, Det Ch Insp Amanda Mawhinney told the inquest.>

“Operation Early Retirement” again by the Met. “Oh dear the officer responsible has now retired. There is nothing we can do.”

Retirement should not be an indemnity for incompentent officers. They should be hauled out of retirement, investigated, and lose their fat pensions if found guilty or incompetent.
