Is anything stopping them from building in the UK?
And pay import fees to import to EU?
In that case Tesla would have needed to pay import fees and face plenty of Red tape.
Even Elon Musk isn’t insane enough to not build the European Tesla factory within the single market.
It’s the same reason why the new INTEL chip factory will be opened some where within the single market.
Really? Why?
I dunno about the economics of the whole thing. But just optically, it is a very “big pp” move to build your car factory in Germany, the European car powerhouse. It’s a statement.
No workforce and constant supply chain issues – what more could an egomaniac entrepreneur wish for?
No, they shouldn’t have. This reads like an article written by a bitter British author in that it makes zero valid argument.
Regardless of the bureaucratic hurdles faced in Germany, it is evident that Tesla wanted to have access to the largest market possible with the least trade barriers possible. That means the UK doesn’t come close to Germany – or any EU country for that matter.
One thing to keep in mind is that Forbes articles are opinion articles from external contributors.
Neither – he should have put it in Denmark.
As someone who knows the UK situation only from the news, have any large corporations invested there long-term in the last few years?

Maybe, maybe not. The German car industry would’ve preferred if it were the UK, because it would have run up Tesla’s costs significantly, at least if they planned on selling any cars on the continent.
He didn’t, though, so it’s a moot question.
No. Planning bureaucracy in the UK is also a nightmare.

The case for lithium doesn’t stand scrutiny either. Lithium extraction in Cornwall is still at very early stages. In comparison, Portugal has an established lithium mining sector and German companies themselves are looking to [invest further into that sector](https://chargedevs.com/newswire/german-firms-plan-to-exploit-massive-lithium-deposits-beneath-the-rhine/).
I’m not quite sure where the argument on subsidies comes from. Tesla’s profits still largely comes from regulatory credits so Musk’s tirade on this is difficult to take seriously. They also didn’t turn down 1.28bn euros in funding like the author is claiming, they just [weren’t eligible for it](https://electrek.co/2021/11/26/tesla-withdraws-application-1b-subsidies-german-factory-musk-implies-dont-want-it/).
