My handmade first time pastéis de nata :>

  1. Hey OP, honestly, the few bad comments are completely unjustified. Some people in here, (and it’s something somewhat common within our people), are very insecure, and jealous, so they tend to hate on people who are proud in whatever thing they created. These look great. I’m also curious about the cheese tho.

  2. Seem pretty good for a first try.

Just be wary that the outer layer should be crusty. Your’s seems spongy and more similar to another portuguese sweet called “Queijadas”.

Keep trying and you will do better 🙂 don’t take heed of the mean comments. Some people are just critical without adding nothing to the discussion.

  3. Pastéis de nata are a culturally significant food ( well done for spelling it right) which do not have a lot of variation ever. And it is basically an impossible thing to get right for any domestic baker because they require very short cooking periods at thr center, stable temperature part of a very very hot oven.

We do not make pastéis de nata at home, honestly. I know I would not be able to do proper ones, myself.

  4. Looks amazing, I would eat them all! The crust reminds me a bit of “queijadinha” another traditional sweet with cheese that I like alot.

  5. That looks yummy! Now I’m hungry… ☺
Last Christmas I tried to make a big one like a big tart, it didn’t look that great but it tasted amaaaazing. And with the rest of the egg whites I made a Pavlova. Thx for sharing 💛

  6. I don’t know what pastry you used, but from the photos, it doesn’t look like the right one.

Did you even used puff pastry?

  7. Reddit’s comment section is allways filled with so much unjustified negativity… these look amazing and I’d definitly try one and probably devour the other two 😂

  8. Holy shit I wish us Portuguese folks would be as defensive towards things like political injustice as we are towards our pastries!

    No, your pastéis de nata don’t look much like a pastel de nata (although the first one from the right seems about right);

No, you don’t put cinnamon on top of them when you’re serving – usually it’s up to the person who’s eating that decide if they want cinnamon on their own pastel or not. It is however recommended for people who like cinnamon and the ORIGINAL pastéis de Belém (don’t care if you think they’re overrated, that’s literally their birthplace and they know it better than all of you) are sold with a little cinnamon packet on the side.

No, you don’t serve that with ice cream or anything else. The only thing “acceptable” by strict Portuguese standards is a bica, italiana, etc. (an expresso)

Having all that said, this is a super complicated pastry, almost impossible to master. The fact that you took them out of the oven and they stood on their own already proves you’re on a good track. Be prepared to do dozens if not hundreds of batches before getting it minimally right.

Kudos to you for attempting something hard and to display it online without worries of judgement.

  9. Oh hey now those are some pretty looking pasteis de nata! Look at those black spots! Amazing!
The fact that you’ve baked something traditional and so cherished in my home country makes me so happy! Thank you for sharing and I hope you keep exploring Portuguese cuisine cause we have some real good stuff 🙂
