Its every companies fault they knew it was coming and carried on as normal. Then wondered why its all fucked up.
Oh look, Brexit’s going as well as the remain campaign said it would…
>Dover boss blames Brexit for chaos that’s brought Kent to a halt – despite having 6 years to prepare
Even if they had 60 years to prepare it wouldn’t have been enough to have dealt with the quantum change and increase in work abitarily foisted on them.
HMRC still don’t have systems ready, so not just on boarder side. Its all a joke, horrible and punishing concept our Brexit.
Do they think that they are trying to bring the port to a halt to prove a point? Whoever Dover Boss is.
Britain is not prepared for Brexit because all corporations are following one model of business:
Give more responsibility
To fewer staff
Practically freeze the wages.
Brexit creates a whole new demand of responsibility, too much for it to be foisted onto the existing staff. However, corporations refuse to learn or change because to do so would threaten their profits. The idea of hiring more staff or raising wages to reflect the stressful demands of a job is something that refuse to contemplate.
I wonder what point it becomes more effective to route ferries and freight to Rotterdam rather than persevere with everything going to France and clearly falling to bits?
The French, whose border checks are in Dover, offered to invest millions into extra capacity back in December 2020 to stop this happening. The UK Government said no.
It’s not the Dover boss that’s the problem. The idea was always a ridiculous one foisted upon us through lies and deception by people who only ever cared about power and their own vanity. It would never have worked no matter how long they had, because they were never presented with workable solutions to the political problems they hadn’t created. The only people still pretending otherwise are liars, the stupid and the media, most of which belong to the first two groups. Those that don’t are as guilty as the politicians.
It wasn’t that many years ago when a couple of times a year we’d wake up on a Saturday morning and decide on a whim to go to Bruges or Lille for the day, those days are long gone.
I mean, at least they are blaming into the right direction. Yesterday they kept blaming the French.
Who could have thought that one of the main reasons for Brexit (control of our borders) would come and bite the UK up its own ass? Surely no one could have known.
This wouldn’t be happening if it wasn’t for Brexit.
The fact that the Daily Mail are highlighting that they had “6 years to prepare” proves that they know that.
If it hadn’t been for the lies told by the Daily Mail and others, no one would have needed to spend six years trying to mitigate the negative effects of Brexit!
The only consolation is that now many of those who voted to Leave the EU now can’t even leave the country – All their own fault.
Note also that there is still no fixed end point.
Potential UK prime ministers are promising to blanket scrap regulations and standards inherited from the EU: guess what that will mean for border checks, export procedures and therefore port capacity and throughput.
Since there is now a full customs and regulatory border, the UK is also dependent on other country’s willingness to increase staff and infrastructure to maintain throughput. When and how much that will happen when those other countries have their own priorities is anyone’s guess.
The UK is breaking the treaties it signed up to, adding yet another variable into the mix: what happens to export requirements if the EU retaliates by scrapping parts of the TCA? Who knows.
On and on it goes.
Nothing has been resolved. Everything is still in flux. You have to make decisions on assumptions or don’t make them at all because of lack of information. The agenda as well as the time table is driven by the immediate (and ever changing) party-political needs of the politicians in charge, and you’re expected to prepare. How do you deal with that? You probably don’t.
Except they didn’t have 6 years, yet more spin on the story.
What most forget is that the tories never wanted to leave in the first place, remaining In the eu was very much the tories plan. When things didn’t go their way the party was thrown into turmoil, the pm and home secretary literally resigned because they were that against it. For the next 3 years there was tremendous infighting, a ge and legal battles to prevent it from happening. In 2019 the largest mandate was given through the landslide ge, then covid hit.
In reality we’ve only had, at best, a year to deal with this.
But hey, this is reddit where historical events like every tory cabinet member bar one didn’t campaign to remain, where Cameron wasn’t replaced by an ardent remain campaigner and where, apparently, this was somehow all the work of a man who wasn’t even in the house at the time of the referendum.
Dover boss blamed French Police for not sending enough officers to msn the passport booths. It was French politicians who blamed Brexit.
So much sovereignty
Prepare for what? We were being told that everything was going to be better. By the Daily Mail, among others
