British intelligence recycles old argument for thwarting strong encryption: Think of the children!

  1. Issue is you either have to give up privacy to make it easier to catch child abusers and terrorists or just accept that our privacy comes at the cost of other people being able to conceal their crimes

Edit: So after some insults and weird messages from people on here and people accusing me of defending governments nobody has been able to explain how you can give people total privacy while guaranteeing that criminals can’t exploit that privacy

It’s just a statement of fact that people can exploit privacy

  2. They’re going to keep doing this until it works.

Honestly the cynic in me thinks they’re gonna let the next terrorist attack they find out about go ahead so they can try to blame message encryption afterward and perhaps use the attack to justify a crackdown.

  3. Its either think of the children or bloodthirsty Islamic terrorists.
The true irony is that the private keys were surreptitiously leaked from all the major players to FVEY years ago.

  4. Choose Tor, choose Linux, Choose Tails, choose Calyx OS, choose Signal, PGP, privacy, freedom, anything that doesn’t force anyone to give up their fundamental rights and freedom. Do 99% of people have anything seriously wrong to hide? No. The world will only become 100% ‘perfect’ if 100% of people give up 100% of their freedoms and privacy.

  5. But it’s not just encryption criminals will use, unless they’re bad at what they’re doing. They’d probably use something like a live OS to minimise local files, do their criminal stuff on a segregated network and likely have different hardware for it.

Encryption isn’t that much of a roadblock if you’ve got physical access to a device, and if you’re looking into someone you definitely believe is a pedo, you’ll likely have siezed as many devices as you can.

  6. This authoritarian government have previously spouted, “Nothing to hide, nothing to fear.”

In that case, I look forward to their publishing all of their WhatsApp group messages where sleazy tax/PPE wheezes, flat refurbishment, VIP lanes and such like are released to the public.

  7. Somehow, I find it hard to believe that the people who gave us much of modern cyber security don’t think that any serious criminals won’t just type gpg -c terrorismStuff.txt to encrypt all their terrorism stuff

  8. So people are angry with GCHQ for wanting less encryption to catch paedophiles and criminals and not angry at the paedophiles and criminals causing GCHQ to take this stance?

    Weird

  9. Removing encryption would be horrific for kids with it they know the person they’re talking to is who they say they are be it a friend at school with out it a pedo could pretend to be their friend very easily and no one wants that

  10. Children need encryption to have private conversations so they can report abuse and wrongdoing with confidence. Think of the Children who need encryption.
