Staycation-Roundstone Galway, what a place. Close to Dogs Bay and Gurteen Bay. Got an Air bnb for a couple of nights, reasonable enough. But the creamy pints in the Kings Bar, and the view. Sweet Jaysus they were amazing. We don’t appreciate wha we have on our doorstep lads. Anyone else staycate?

  1. The term “staycation” is very upsetting. It even assumes it’s acceptable for an Irish native to use the term vacation instead of holiday. It’s equally as bad as hollibops.

  2. I’ve taken a fair few road trips over the years I’ve lived here.

Been [up in that neck of the woods](https://imgur.com/gallery/9bmog) a [couple of times](https://imgur.com/gallery/VUoCY) a while back; stayed in Galway for a few nights the first trip, and in a little B&B in Cleggan the second. The drive along Doo Lough was my favourite stretch; despite its tragic history, it’s such a beautiful bit of country. Also loved Ross Errilly Friary; my favourite ecclesiastical ruin.

Did a longer trip up to County Mayo one time and stayed at a few different spots, a hotel in Westport, a B&B in Keel on Achill, and a B&B in Ballina behind the cathedral. Drove all around checking out scenic spots like Minaun and [Downpatrick Head](https://i.imgur.com/cQzg5iU.jpg), and old ruins, and stopping off at little villages like Killala to have a wander. Achill in particular was brilliant.

Done a few shorter trips as well; took an overnight trip down to [Cahir and Lismore once](https://youtu.be/8xXMEWI2tj0) and stayed a night at the Old Convent (got incredibly lucky with a cancellation, otherwise it was impossible to book a room there, and now they’re not doing accommodations anymore at all, sadly…). [Cahir Castle](https://i.imgur.com/eXdcrkH.jpg) was impressive, the [Swiss Cottage](https://i.imgur.com/fbGy3FN.jpg) was a fascinating bit of history, and [the gardens at Lismore Castle](https://i.imgur.com/5BfK1gX.jpg) were quite pleasant to wander; the contrast between the upper and lower gardens was interesting.

Took a short drive up to Birr one day to [check out the castle and gardens](https://i.imgur.com/Bvinlc1.jpg), which were absolutely stunning, and then stopped by Lorrha to see all the beautiful ruins there, and stayed overnight on a lovely little farm and had a wonderful homemade supper and breakfast. Stopped by Portumna on the way home to check out Portumna Castle, and just happened to catch an interesting presentation and tour of the working gardens while I was there.

Stopped traveling for a while due to Covid, but this year I’ve taken a couple short trips. Stayed a couple nights at a beautiful old self-catering cottage out near Doolin and, after nearly seven years living in County Clare, finally [visited the Cliffs](https://i.imgur.com/ItietPC.jpg) and the Burren.

And last month I had to go [do a thing](https://i.imgur.com/42xI6C7.jpg) in Killarney, so I stayed there a couple nights and took the opportunity to go check out some more [cool ruins](https://i.imgur.com/u8pJ8lm.jpg) and [lovely scenery](https://i.imgur.com/zQiXfP7.jpg) while I was down there. Hoping to make a proper trip down to Kerry one of these days, maybe during one of my weeks off I’ve booked later this year; I haven’t been down that way in ages, and never have done the full Ring of Kerry properly (just Dingle, on my first trip here over a decade ago…).

  3. Yeah had 2 holidays abroad this year and 2 staycations. One more short trip to France on September.

Everything is so much better abroad. Better weather (heatwaves notwithstanding), better food, better sights, better shopping, better standard of accommodation and prices, better public transport. And generally not as expensive as ireland. (I’m talking mainland Europe)

We’re staying in a cabin in Tipperary in the middle of fecking nowhere for 4 nights right now and it’s costing us €450. We’ve just booked an apartment for Carcassonne in September for 3 nights for €240. Waaaaaaay nicer gaff, in a waaaaaaay nicer location.

Rant over. Sorry if it’s very negative. I’m feeling ripped off.

  4. We did, it pissed down for 5 of the 7 days and a few of the group got COVID. Pints were decent though.

  5. Spent week an a half camping from Keem Bay, Kingstown Beach, Dogs Bay, Barley Cove and then a night over Hooks head. Then went back for 2 more nights in Keem cause its too good. Amazing stuff. Most of money went on fuel and beer :D. Spearfished nearly all the food I consumed.

  6. Yeah, I plan on cycling/camping from Dublin-Rosslare-cork-Galway next month.

Wanted to do a big spin on the continent this summer but the ferries were booked out because there’s (understandably) a lot of people who don’t want to fly this year given the chaos at most airports.

Just hope the rain stays away- the thought of having a piss-wet holiday is precisely the reason I wanted to cycle in France in the first place 😳
