**Summary:** According to this website, for an [organisation affiliated with the UK Conservative Party](https://www.conservativesabroad.org/about-us), it is possible for foreign nationals (who aren’t British Citizens or Voters) to join Conservatives Abroad for £25 a year. This apparently entitles them to a **vote in the party leader election**. In other words, they can **choose the next Prime Minister of the UK from the two remaining candidates picked by the Parliamentary Conservative Party**.

**Quote:**

>There are many Conservatives Abroad local groups all over the world. They are friendly, welcoming circles that do more than discuss politics. Many of our members see their local Conservatives Abroad group as a social network or extended family. Membership of Conservatives Abroad is open to all who live abroad and pledge support for the UK Conservative Party. You do not have to be a voter or a UK citizen.
>
>An individual’s Conservative Party membership is always linked to a constituency Conservative Association. Anyone can apply to join any Conservative Association, regardless of where they live, and some choose to join more than one! By becoming a member of a Conservative Association, you also become a member of the Conservative Party.
>
>Membership of Conservatives Abroad is administered by the Cities of London & Westminster Conservative Association (CLWCA). By joining CLWCA as an overseas member, you become a member of the Conservative Party and of Conservatives Abroad. You are entitled to all the benefits of party membership, including participation in the Conservative Policy Forum, attendance at party conferences and a vote in the election of the party leader.
>
>We would be delighted to welcome you as a member of Conservatives Abroad, the Conservative Party and CLWCA.

**Note 1:** I made this post before, directly linking to to the web page but editorialising the title of my post, which is a breach of the /r/unitedkingdom rules and was thus removed. Fair cop! It was gaining a lot of attention from the users here though, so it’s clearly interesting to people, and I feel it’s important for people to be aware of this situation, so I’m posting it again.

**Note 2:** If someone joined *right now* they would not have a vote because the cutoff was June 22 2022 for this election.

  1. so in theory, a malicious party could use a network of fake accounts to decide the british PM for just £25 a vote?
Which the conservatives are no doubt fine with because they get their cut. Ultimately we still get giant douche or turd sandwhich so it’s prob moot for the public but does open the country to being nudged in a particular direction

  2. I think this is a bit of a non story. They are gonna perform all sorts of checks on you including electoral roll and credit agencies.

  3. OK, so I’m living abroad at the moment, and and my partner is a foreign national, and we have a spare £25.

So, I was thinking we could sign her up and vote for the worst possible candidate, for a laugh. Haha.

Then I saw Liz Truss is already massively favoured to win, what would be the point?

  4. Claus Schwab is proud …… WEF ….will own nothing have no privacy and be happy by 2030…… Voting will do nothing’s to 8/9 billion people around glob…… Wake the f up…. People …we are robbed from freedoms liberties and wealth …. Most of politicians are WEF board members and young leader’s ….. They follows Claus Schwab agenda ….. Check WEF website ….. Everything is there …..

  5. What have one anything to do with another? That sounds racist to ask people who are members of the same organisation what is their nationality to determine if they have a say (or not)

I would not be a member of an organisation that would determine I have no say because my nationality is not right

  6. Just to be clear, foreign donors have more say in our countries next pm than the average British voter

Note – roughly 160,000 Tory members are voting in next pm. There were roughly 13.9 million people who voted Tory at 2019 ge. Just leaving that out there

  7. Typical tory logic. You get no say in who the PM is if you’re a voter who votes the wrong way, but you *do* get a say if you’re a non voter who’d vote the right way if you could.

  8. Funny how Brits abroad weren’t allowed to vote in the Brexit referendum, but now anyone with a spare £25 and previous right to vote can decide the future of the country (and how these people’s legitimacy is reviewed is nebulous because that’s how democracy works, right?)

  9. I wish, I wish for the lowest possible turnout in order to remove as much legitimacy as can be taken from this charade, this facile act, this unpopular method of avoiding a general election.

  10. I am an American who wants to move to the United Kingdom to study and I have to say this is very stupid and makes no sense at all, Tories gonna tory I guess.

  11. >”Ok Rishi, we’re sorry, but we’ve polled the Tory membership and they hate you. You’re far too foreign looking for them, and they’re pretty racist to be honest. But don’t worry, we have a plan, we’ve found a way to get lots of Indians to vote for you.”

  12. So this is the 3ror 4th time that this idea spins in my head, shall we all get membership and fuck them over?

  13. Makes sense, foreigners have been proven to be smarter than the Briton. How’s your burning EU flags business going?

  14. Guessing the Prime Minister race is not going the way they expected so changing the rules again to allow them to manipulate the vote to get the candidate the billionaires want. Double down news should get hold of this as well.

  15. What I don’t see in the comments is anyone asking:

    Who performs the eligibility checks?

Who polices that the eligibility checks are performed satisfactorily?

If the body performing the checks decided to allow anyone to join without checks, what law would they be breaking, if any?
