On this day, the Forty Conspirators, a Portuguese nationalistic group, succeeded in their revolution to overthrow the Spanish in Lisbon and acclaimed Duke João de Bragança as King João IV, thus beginning the Restoration War (1640), a 28 year war where Portugal fought for its independence from Spain.

Interesting war. England came to the rescue at an interesting time and for interesting reasons.
Just had the glorious revolution in England so out with the cromwell republic and in with Charles ll. Charles wanted to get rid of some of cromwells new army that was being demonilized so sent 3000 veterans of the civil war, arguably some of the best we had to Portugal under the command of a famous German soldier of fortune, they where a big success.
Kind of a 3 birds one stone, help our ally portugal be free, fuck spain because spain and get rid of some soldiers he didnt trust.
