The Bernese dialect band Lauwarm performed at the Brasserie Lorraine on 18 July, but had to end the gig early because guests felt “uncomfortable”. This caused criticism.
Actually, another band was supposed to perform at the Brasserie Lorraine in Bern on this Monday at the beginning of the summer holidays. But they cancelled at short notice. The Brasserie was then able to get the Bernese dialect band Lauwarm to play. They stepped in on 18 July. The five-member band has reggae, indie world and pop in its programme.
But the performance did not last long. Because various concertgoers expressed “discomfort with the situation” to the organisers, they broke off the concert after consulting with the band members. This was announced by the Brasserie Lorraine cooperative on Facebook on Monday.
The discomfort of the concert-goers was related to the topic of “cultural appropriation”, the Facebook post says: the adoption of a culture by members of another culture. In other words, because the band Lauwarm is made up of five white men, some of them with Rastafarian haircuts, and not indigenous Jamaicans whose ancestors had experienced the exclusion thematised in reggae music, they are not legitimised to play reggae in the eyes of some.
In a Facebook post, those responsible apologise “to all the people for whom the concert has caused bad feelings”. They were responsible for this because they had invited the band. The own “awareness gaps” as well as the reaction of many guests had once again shown how charged the topic was. “We failed to deal with it enough in advance and to protect you.”
The reactions to the Facebook post are irritated – but not because of “cultural appropriation”, but because the concert was cancelled. One user asks if there will only be Ländler in the Brasserie Lorraine in the future, “whereas Scottish would probably have to be interfered with again”. A Facebook user is outraged and refers to Bob Marley: “Would he say that reggae should only be played by Jamaicans?! Seriously?!? By the way, he himself had a white father.” A user writes: “My family in Africa would ask: do you have any problems in your life at all?” Tom Berger, co-faction leader of the FDP City of Bern, tweets, “Let’s be honest. If you feel ‘uncomfortable’ because white people play reggae music, could it be that YOU are the problem …?”
Officials at Brasserie Lorraine could not be reached for comment on Tuesday morning, saying to try again later. The band Lauwarm also did not respond at short notice to an enquiry from 20 Minuten.
However, the discussion on the topic of “cultural appropriation” is to be continued: A discussion round on the topic of cultural appropriation will take place at the Lorraine on 18 August. The guests’ reactions to the cancellation of the concert had shown “that we have to talk together and listen to each other”. That is why everyone who wants to is invited. Respectful interaction is expected, racism and discrimination have “no place”.
That’s about the stupidest thing I ever read in 20min. And this time it’s not their fault… Maybe that restaurant should choose better guests.
When will breathing become cultural appropriation? Need to know when so that I can join a monastery then and never come out again
Personally I feel “discomfort with the situation” when reading such things…
Can we please create a worldwide safe-space for me and cancel the Woke-Ultras?
The whole concept of “cultural appropriation” has no place in Switzerland. I would even argue that saying “X aren’t allowed to do Y if they are white (or any colors)” is racial discrimination.
hahahaha are you fucking kidding me. seriously, what the fuck is happening to the world.
Well I better hope no non-Italians are playing the piano, cause that’s where it was invented and I would feel very uncomfortable seeing anyone else playing it.
We are living in the most fucked up timeline possible
I really don’t like to say it but…
The anti SJW were right this time.
Imo, the craziest part is that the brasserie has apologized to the lunatics.
Are white jamaicans allowed to make raggiae music ?
Are black people allowed to wear lederhosen at the Oktoberfest ?
Are non Italians allowed to make spaghetti ?
So many questions 🤦
So, only Alphorn and Mundart/patois in concerts from now on.
Wokeness is a cancer. These lunatics who frequent such *tolerant*, *alternative* places are just as racist and crazy as the skinheads they claim to hate so much. The fact that this *rustic restaurant run on a non-profit basis by a collective* felt like it had to apologize to the customers who protested says a lot. If you don’t like it you can leave. It’s not like there is a profit to be made, is there?
Abolish yourself.
Ötzi had dreadlocks for a hairstyle like 5,300 years ago….predating Rastafarianism by 5 millennia.
Dreads are greek.
Understandable reaction to hearing bernese dialect music.
Michael Jackson was the worst of them all. As a White, i feel so offended 🙄 Some people have problems…
After the bullshit, the grovelling.
Imo being invested in another culture and implementing aspects of it in your own life is one of the biggest compliments and sign of respect you can give.
But in the end, some people are just looking to be offended and that’s all that matters to them.
Brasserie Lorraine used to be all about tolerance.
And I always thought, racial segregation is just something for the far right. You never stop learning…
Once upon a time, I used to love wearing traditional shirts from foreign countries.
But that’s over. In order not to be guilty of cultural appropriation, I only wear Edelweiss shirts now.
The only people that get this fucking upset about culutral things instead of just letting it blend and be appreciated are those that don’t have any cultural connection themselves
Ah yes. The hair style that even the Greeks wore during classical time and the earliest adherents of Christianity wore, like the first bishop of Jerusalem, James the Just. Truly something that has never occured here in Europe before! /s
In all seriousness, this is beyond ridiculous.
wtf! that’s so ridiculous i don’t know what to say.. this is the most racist thing ever
I‘m so tired of seeing the woke mind cancer slowly seeping into europe for the last ten years.
> Weil verschiedene Konzertbesucherinnen und -besucher gegenüber den Veranstaltern «Unwohlsein mit der Situation» äusserten, brachen diese nach Rücksprache mit den Bandmitgliedern das Konzert ab.
I understand that sometimes things bug people or they feel awkward about something – but feelings are something really subjective. Not everyone feels the same way and that’s a good thing. So please just remove yourself from the situation and let everyone else have fun. You can still afterwards comment or criticize something if you think it’s something that needs to be looked into (which is clearly not the case here btw).
How dare y’all eat Pizza and Pasta?! This was the food of my ancestors! /s
Woko Haram at it again. I’m a leftist myself but fuck these guys.
Also they aren’t allowed to play reggae?? Because they’re white.
What about Dodo??
Let me be the devil’s advocate and I am bracing myself for the downvotes.
Cultural appropriation is not only inevitable but can be very positive.
In fact, some of my favorite food are a direct result of cultural appropriation: Nachos and burritos for instance (those aren’t things in Mexico), California Rolls, Chocolate fondue (invented in NYC by a swiss)…I could go on and on as usual about food -for a long time- but I will make myself hungry 🙂
However, and as with everything, cultural appropriation can be problematic, when it’s all about cherry picking certain elements of the culture. When a whole culture is reduce to being an accessory, especially when using sacred symbols without understanding their meaning as accessories. When two people of different races supporting the same hairstyle and only one get discriminated against because of it. I can go on and on but I will make myself sad 🙁
In this specific case, I wasn’t there to know what happened but it’s possible that the issue is simply cultural appropriation is not a substitute for diversity. And that this issue is more layered and nuanced than a 20 minutes article could cover. But again, I wasn’t there and I will go mind my own business now.
Woke = Mongos
Die wokeness goht mir langsam ufe Sack… Hüt gits keini Diskussione meh, es chunnt nume no dr Diskursblocker meh sigi rassistisch, transphob oder sunscht öbbis🫠
I’m fed up with woke , they always wake up the morning in order to find something to be offended.
Horsesgoe theory at it again – liberal leftists are using the exact same “purity of race” and “protection of culture” arguments that Natsees and other Nationalists and racists have used for a very long time.
Next up they’ll try to bar people with different skin shades from marrying (keeping blood pure) and then soon after the separste fountains and stuff.
It’s insanity – and like the other racists, on the other side of the political spectrum, they too believe, that they are doing “the right thing” or even “a good thing”
Stuff like this hurts the cause more than any people just beeing crazy. This is a very bad look for anybody trying to fight racism – it just makes people more likely to look away when thier is acutally cause to discuss something.
Sad.
Clown world
Let‘s be clear, this BS is coming from the US. It‘s because some people here decided to adopt the narrow ideas of representation and culture coming from a US-paradigm.
When “anti”racism goes so far it becomes racist itself. This “cultural appropriation” thing comes from america. And it’s totally stupid. Are now only white original swiss allowed to sell fondue? What about using the german or the english language.. God I hate when people focus so hard on unimportant things like skincolor or “race”.
