No obligation to defend Ukraine from Russia, Nato chief says

  1. So basically, the West and Russia come to terms that the Baltics remain under Western control (for the time being), Russian access to that sea available through Kaliningrad and Leningrad (albeit restricted by NATO allies), but that the line to the Black Sea will give resource-rich Eastern Ukraine and safe access to the Black Sea to Russia.

This might satisfy Putin’s regime for a while. After all, he saw the situation up to now as a de facto return to the Brest-Litovsk terms where West would control much of the resources which geopolitically belong in the Russian sphere of influence.

We’ll see how far he will want to push the East-West boundary (which some see as Slavic/Germanic boundary) in the future. Russia got a taste of it when it pushed it back to Berlin, but he might not be crazy to think Russia might in time (20-25 years) regain some of the buffer it lost after the Cold War.

My guess is that now Putin will push for a neutral band of states, from Poland, through the former Czechoslovakia, Hungary, former Yugoslavia to Albania. His regime will continue to fuel anti-Western/EU sentiments in those countries (and he’s mightily succeeding so far, that is clear).

  2. Even if you plan on supporting militarily, this is a wise thing to say to prevent Ukraine from provoking Donbas/Russia and inciting a war, you’ve already verbally committed to. Saakashvili tried this, but NATO didn’t help Georgia.

  3. No need to. Ukraine can defend itself. We already got 255k good equipped army and 300k in reserves. Russians couldn’t even strom small city like Mariupol, we not even talking about major cities.

  4. Does this guy have brain damage or something? Why not just say NOTHING?

What are they gonna do next, start feeding the Russians intelligence against Ukraine?

  5. Dear NATO chief everyone knows we have no obligation but sitting quietly would have been better option, as Russia might think we will defend Ukraine either way instead you had to go yapping without any need to do so. Resignation would be appreciated.

  6. Nato is afraid of Russia but also have power to defeat Russia. The problem is that they have no interest in intervening any conflict with Russia in it. Because for them their gains wouldn’t compensate their losses. Even if Russia losses, it would cause serious damage to winner. Putin knows that and plays smart and risky game.
