I mean, it’s either that or stop making it a crime to actually build housing and that’s just preposterous! Do that and a *developer* might turn a profit, that’s even worse!
They know exactly what they are doing, the same thing the British did to cause the famine.
When they represent corporate interests they are betraying those who elected them and should be jailed for treason or at the very least tried in court for financial terrorism.
We need to build more apartment units, and slow our population growth.
Right now new housing construction is struggling to keep pace with our rapid population growth.
This is what happens when demand outstrips supply.
I know of people AirBnB’ing a spot. They turned the sitting room into a bedroom and built an extension and have 5 bedrooms in total and make 7k a month on average. Rent’s won’t stop here if that’s the alternative.

There will be blood. I’m homeless.
If you fuckers let your folks vote for ff/fg cock suckling alliance again I’m out for good.
Probably will anyway tbh.
I think that preventing “buy to rent” would have solved many problems.
Ha ha hah – what? This is funny! I think. Although I don’t understand it.
If it comes to Maoism, it’s out of my hands as far as I’m concerned…it’s not like we haven’t been warning about the housing crisis for the better part of a decade now. But those of us on the left and in opposition were called extremists, populists and much worse besides for pointing out the obvious.
Enjoy the struggle sessions lads.
I’m emigrating on Thursday , this shit is just making me bitter 😂
It’s not fair to expect Fine Gael to fix this mess quickly, sure they’ve only been in power eleven years.
I think a lot of people really are underestimating just how close we may well be to the situation reaching a point where large swathes of the population turn to extremism of one form or another.
The proliferation of S110 companies, allowed by the Irish government, which are landlords, and various other types of large scale investment vehicles are a huge part of the problem.
This is about the third thread again repeating something that is not true. Rents are not “up by 9%” rents for new tenancies are. It’s a different metric and not measuring all rents.
Every year for the past 15 years, our governments have brought in new rules/legislation/regulations to “protect” the tenants and every year, more landlord leave the market than are joining. The result, entirely predictable, less property available and higher prices. I should know, I’m a landlord.
Exactly how I imaged the start of the Three body problem.
The politicians here will take a page on that straight from the Tories/right wing politics. Blame opposition parties, minorities, commies who don’t understand the “free market” and even the people (you know the plebs who don’t work hard enough to keep their landlords happy). That train is never late! You can already see here some arguments how the disaster is a result of immigration and nothing to do with the corrupt policy makers and institutions. History repeating itself and all that.
