Cork man jailed for three years for dealing cannabis

  1. > Judge Boyle imposed a sentence of five and a half years, with the last two and a half years suspended, at Cork Circuit Criminal Court.

    > Defence barrister Paula McCarthy said the accused engaged fully with the gardaí and the probation service and pleaded guilty to the charges at an early stage. Ms McCarthy, BL, said the defendant had also engaged in rehabilitation.

That’s quite a harsh sentence. Is there more to the story?

  2. I was born and raised in Cork. I now live in Chicago. Living over here and seeing how fully legal and taxed cannabis is working so well for us just makes me fucking angry that things are still so backwards towards it at home. Booze is so much more destructive to Irish society than cannabis ever was and I’m not even a fan of the stuff. Just pisses me off that I’ve seen violent criminals time and again get bullshit suspended sentences in Cork while they still lock people up for having plants.

  3. What a joke. They’ll jail you for selling weed, but scumbags assaulting people get suspended sentences.

  4. *“There was green plant-like material in the water of the downstairs toilet and the sink was clogged with cloudy water. I believe this was cocaine he tried to wash down with water,” Garda Desmond said.*

When he spotted the Garda he ran in the flat and flushed the Class A. Scumbag was a coke dealer with 2 previous convictions, who admitted to dealing for 5yrs. You destroy a lot of lives in 5yrs.

  5. Haven’t people who committed violent crimes received far lesser sentences? Sorry, but someone selling cannabis is causing zero harm – in fact they are likely helping people who need it for medicine. How unjust and immoral…

  6. Judge Helen Boyle said an aggravating factor in the case against Brian Collins, 51, is that he was knowingly involved in dealing drugs in Cork City

As opposed to unknowingly being drug dealer?

  7. It is so strange that weed is celebrated in movies and music and yet people get sent to jail for selling it. The new season of stranger things (the most watched show in the world) has teenage characters smoking weed and its a big joke. Bob Dylan and the Beatles sing about, the judge probably listens to their music but then the judge hands out crazy jail sentences.

Culturally it is seen as a harmless drug and yet there are extreme jail sentences for it.

Legalize now and get some tax in.

That being said i don’t smoke it. It does not agree with me.

  8. This is pure evil. Imagine I grabbed you and locked you in a concrete cell for three years for no justifiable reason? People would think I was the worst kind of monster.

There’s no reason for cannabis to be met with this sort of malevolent reaction. It’s a moral tragedy.

  9. I don’t agree with what this guy has done. But Lisa Smyth got less time for joining an international terrorist group that slaughtered civilians

The Irish legal system is completely clown car

  10. Genuinely not sure how much longer I can live in this country- I cringe every day when I read stories like this. Wasting Guards time, wasting courts time, screwing up people’s lives, making gangs richer and more dangerous meanwhile fuckers in Leinster House making everything out to be like rocket science and dragging their heels in everything they do.

  11. Weed is the new alcohol for most young people. Once again Ireland a fucking century behind most of the modern world. Fuckin Thailand has legalised weed ffs. Thailand is more progressive than Ireland

  12. Name and shame the Gardaí involved. The government has given up being a government and has given the Gardaí to the British military.

  13. I hear drugs are on their last legs now. Trade sanctions are making them lose home support but I think their biggest mistake was trying to invade Russia in the winter. I’m expecting a ceasefire any day now. We did it, lads, we’ve won the war on drugs!

  14. It’s stupid that I can go to the off license and buy enough vodka or whiskey to kill myself but I can’t go shop and buy a joint.

  15. Ah here, the punishment for pocketing 1.5million from the exchequer needs to be more than just a financial punishment to be a deterrent. Christ, we jailed the heads of Anglo for lying on their financial statements, you think they didn’t deserve a punishment?

  16. The punishment for any sort of weed related infractions in this country is just straight up draconian.
