Some more background info: this is the first time since 2012 where Singapore didn’t win (with the exception of 2021 where they didn’t participate) and the first time ever Switzerland won!
Also, „Gold“ is misleading here, Switzerland won gold already 3x (2019, 2016 and 2013) but all 3 finalists get gold and we’ve been third 3x.
This year, Switzerland won the *trophy*!
It’s very different from the Physics Olympics where students basically just solve difficult exercises individually. It’s a project based tournament where students work on actual research problems.
See IYPT.org for more or https://SYPT.ch for info on the Swiss tournament/team!
Edit: I know sadly that the Swiss association is currently having difficulty finding the money to organize the local tournaments, buy equipment and pay the international tournament fees for the coming years. (Everything is free for the students, they rely on donations from companies).
So if anyone works for a company who’d like to sponsor them for future years, DM me or contact the association directly on SYPT.ch. It really is a cool tournament and it would be sad if we stopped participating!
