I mean if there isn’t a better deterrent to stop people breaking the law then I don’t know what is?
I mean, we were all confined weren’t we.
Yeah, it was torture. Many people didn’t have any human contact at all.
All I can say is that, some of the people were not able to get food at some points during the lockdown. Probably far worse than being locked up for 23hrs.
Cruelty is the point
Prison should be for rehabilitation not for punishment for the sake of punishment. This isn’t the first time the UN has said we’re going wrong but most likely like the last time the UN said we fucked up, we’ll sweep it under the rug and ignore it.
I have a lot of sympathy for people and how lockdown affected them I know a lot of people who aren’t quite the same after it.
But I don’t think I’m going to get behind the idea that prisoners were technically tortured during lockdown – especially given the fact they were kept in those conditions to mitigate the risk of a prison wide outbreak of a then new virus

If you can’t handle prison then don’t commit criminal acts in the first place.
Its pretty easy to avoid prison if you obey the law.
I’ve no sympathy for convicts. They ain’t there for a holiday, prison should be punishing tbh
So prisoners are whining that it wasn’t as they would’ve liked it during lockdown. Most of society felt the same way. I can’t find it in me to be sympathetic with their plight of being in prison, if they’d not committed crimes they could’ve endured lockdown with everyone else

Prisons not great, it’s pretty miserable, having kids who got caught with a bit of weed, had a bit of a fight or did some petty theft effectively put in isolation for years on end is pretty inhumane. Your talking literal kids who’ve done minor crimes who now are mentally broken. This isn’t just applying to maximum security prisons but to even min security stuff.
And this report isn’t at the start of the pandemic, its autumn 2021, when the rest of the country was sitting in the park having a few beers and generally ignoring any lock down restrictions.
Excellent hindsight. What else could the prisons have done? What else could the rest of society do? I work nights in a hospital. We were locked in with contagious people. What do you suggest we should’ve done differently? There weren’t asnswers

So prisoners were stuck in their accommodation for 23 hours a day, unable to socialise, forced to take meals alone and had their education, work, healthcare and employment opportunities severely impacted?
Wow, that’s nothing like the time I was only allowed to leave my house for an hour’s exercise a day, couldn’t see friends or family for months at a time, had all entertainment and social venues shut down, couldn’t go to onto campus or into the office, and was forced to have medical appointments over the phone and work from home.
Will the UN tell me I was tortured, too? Or are their sympathies only limited to convicted criminals? We all know that lockdown was done for the greater good to keep people from getting sick; let’s not pretend that people didn’t suffer during lockdowns
After reading the report I think the methodology is flawed. 10 non random prisons and 180 prisoners is not exactly gonna give you accurate results.

Not gonna lie I really dont care how violent offenders are treated.
It was torture for people outside too, especially those in flats with no garden. It was all a stark reminder of how fast your rights can be taken away in the name of ‘your own good’ and how society will police itself, turning neighbours into stasi who report each other for sitting in a park.
I don’t doubt the claim that prisoners were mishandled, and also that they all got covid too.
Oh well… If they hadn’t have commited any crimes, they wouldn’t have been in that position.
Lockdowns broke parts of the human rights declaration in relation to freedom of movement and protest
We were all under house arrest without charge
