Historian criticises ‘nasty’ portrayal of Brits in ‘RRR,’ gets schooled by Indians

  1. The original whinging was a piece in the Spectator.

Of course they were going to be apologists for racism and cruelty in the name of the Empire. I just hope that the international audience who see that kind of crap don’t think that these bigots represent mainstream British opinion!

  2. I’d expect this historian to be better informed than the sanitised version of the ‘Empire’ we teach our young.

Maybe that’s asking for too much.

  3. The whole point of fantasy is suspension of belief, who cares how accurate it is? You shouldn’t be looking for actual history in an entertainment, Hollywood have bastardised almost all of it at one point or another, why shouldn’t Bollywood?

  4. Such criticism often has the opposite effect of what is intended.

I bought *Kingdom Come: Deliverance* after it was criticised by what (I cannot think of an alternative to calling) the Woke Left.

Conversely, I was planning to spend the weekend with an Indian friend and this is showing at a local cinema. Thanks Spectator.

Edit: watched and what a film!

  5. I’ve only just realised that all the talk I’ve seen about RRR and “Indians” isn’t about R**D**R/Red Dead Redemption and the depiction of indigenous First Nations Americans.

I did wonder why now of all times it was being brought up everywhere!

  6. The over-the-top portrayal of the “evil” British in this film is rather funny, if you don’t take it personally. The film is a lot of fun, especially the action scenes.

  7. I wish people were capable of distinguishing between the UK Government and the East India company at this point in history. The Government feared and disliked the East India company to the point where they ended up nationalising them. Instead people use the British Empire as one catch all phrase that somehow holds the modern British people responsible for the actions of 19th Century aristocratic individuals, companies and governments. The ignorance drives me nuts as a historian.

Just look at the way people hold modern Brits responsible for people who died 200 years ago compared to say Germany who 80 years ago murdered their way through the world but we get condemned for events hundreds of years ago, whereas modern Germans are held up for their sparkling morality when there are still Nazi’s alive today!!!
