Spain asks European Parliament to make Catalan its first regional language

  1. Aka: delusional attempt from Spain to relegate catalan to a mere derivative of spanish, while it’s actually a whole language on its own

  2. As long as the relevant member state pays for the costs associated with having additional languages, it would seem hard for anyone to object.

  3. We don’t need it for Galician; Portuguese translators in the Parliament do the job already. That’s a fact and has been done; if someone doesn’t like it it’s not my problem.

  4. can anyone ELI5 this to me? I always thought the Madrid government was real touchy about encouraging Catalan identity because it doesn’t like Catalan separationism.

Is this basically a peace offering? Like a “look, we’ll help you maintain Catalan identity while being part of Spain”?
