Without these chips, we are in big trouble – and Britain has no strategy

  1. Fabrication is something that can be done in a developed country, I’ve no idea why us (and other countries like us) don’t do it domestically.

  2. Didn’t need em in the good ld days so don’t em now. we’ll be fine. Anyone who says we need this shit is anti British doomersayer

  3. By how much is the quality of the article reduced by the persistent shoehorning in of the word ‘sexy’?

  4. It is a weakness we do need a fab in the uk. Even if its a small one for limited runs. Since alot of chip design is done here.

  5. I 100% thought this was going to be about potatoes and the heatwave.

I’m quite surprised we actually produce semiconductors in the country.

  6. Let me clear some stuff up.
    1. The government has never controlled the supply of silicon wafers, they have had literally no power over it, many silicon foundries are very much private and the government can do squat apart from place orders.
    2. Most of silicon is made abroad, simply as it is cheaper, we import those chips and with new foundries being built to stop the silicon shortage this makes smaller factories pretty much irrelevant.
    3. The article saying that ‘These chips are different from TSMC chips’ is just plain wrong.
If you want to make a custom order with TSMC that is a certain scale then they will produce it (needs to be pretty massive but my point still stands).
Also there are other vendors who make other kinds of chips as well.

  7. I work in Aerospace. Let me tell you, we are dealing with supply issues WEEKLY that could stop pretty much all international travel if not solved. And it’s getting worse.
