English scientist, environmentalist, and futurist James Lovelock has passed away on his 103rd birthday

Known for his work on the Gaia hypothesis and cryonics, Lovelock was the first to detect CFCs in Earth’s atmosphere and was also an outspoken environmental scientist, talking about the dangers of climate change since the late 1970s and favouring nuclear power over fossil fuels. In 1974, Lovelock was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and was also given numerous other science-related awards during his life. Most recently, Lovelock appeared in good health [on a Tom Scott video](https://youtu.be/2tdiKTSdE9Y) only about a year ago. He passed away on Tuesday at 103 years old surrounded by family.
