Known for his work on the Gaia hypothesis and cryonics, Lovelock was the first to detect CFCs in Earth’s atmosphere and was also an outspoken environmental scientist, talking about the dangers of climate change since the late 1970s and favouring nuclear power over fossil fuels. In 1974, Lovelock was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and was also given numerous other science-related awards during his life.
