It’s not just students. Some households on 2x fulltime wages are hardly breaking even at this point. Especially so if they are also stuck in the rental trap.
Welcome to the club alot of people on universal credit and people who work for a living use them it’s torie Britain after all
Iirc the maintaince loan max (outisde of london, not with parents) is £9.2k. Was plenty, more than enough, to live on for me.
First year accomodation costs are a total scam, and strip the pockets of young people. There should be more support and encouragement to turn to the rest of the private sector that is typically much cheaper.
I suspect, as the article also hints on, that student cost of living effects students whose parents are expected to contribute, but do not.
There will be students put off going to university by this now. They may have the ability to get in but simply cannot afford to go, not unless it is a university within their home town and they can still live at home.
If you need to eat then you need to eat. There is no shame needing help
Never feel guilty about hunger in this barbaric global economy. Use food banks. They are created to feed people who can’t feed themselves.
