Data centre growth a challenge for emissions reduction targets

  1. Didn’t hear anything about cutting the number of data centres in Ireland in order the get those sweet emission numbers ~ looks like there are those that are more again? 🤔So it’s okay to pull money out of the farmers pocket but not from US investments as it has always been in the last 30 years?

  2. It’s a piss take. They want money from people that produce food but breaks for mega corps that suck the grid dry.

  3. My more tech savvy cousin said these data centers need huge amounts of power to operate and are in part the cause of higher prices in Ireland for electricity. No idea if hes talking out of his hole or not .. This being said we dont eat data..

  4. Remember guys: When a crunch for electricity demand comes, powering your home (and potentially keeping you warm) is optional – the power to the data centers is not, it has to be 24/7/365.

  5. Genuine question, what is the global solution to this? Ireland is one of the more environmentally friendly countries to host data centres because our cooler climate means less energy used on cooling. Banning data centres means they’ll go to less energy efficient countries.

But as more and more of our lives go digital there won’t be a slow down in the need for centres. Without data centres there’ll be no Reddit or Netflix or a lot of the services used. Maybe not a bad shout?

  6. I’m more concerned about our (absolutely farcical for a top 50 country) lack of power generation capacity for them myself.
