The cost of living crisis is here, and I think it will only get worse in the near future. It is horrible whenever families are forced to move away from an area they consider home, just because they cannot afford rent anymore.
That being said, I have little sympathy for people who move into a city only to then complain about housing. Yes the current rental market is incredibly broken and it sucks for everyone (including me), but that is something one should consider before moving, and not after.
I sofa-surfed my first year at uni but never considered myself homeless because I had a roof over my head. Definitely interesting to see how different countries define homelessness.
With universities looking to recruit more and more students to fund increasing costs, it is likely to get worse and student finance will never be able to cover the increase in rent we keep seeing. Students are cash cows to landlords and will charge them over the odds because they know students will rent anything they can if it means being able to live in the same city as their uni.
Expected a change in trends by now. Potential students should be looking for uni’s closer to home rather than renting. Education today is way more expensive compared to the early 2000.
