Great, any sign of higher maternity rates for women who don’t get the social rate topped up by their employer?
Yeah good idea to help those in between jobs. Only fair sense they paid in, they should get something back. Maybe reduce dole for these on it long-term.
They do that in other countries. It gradually gets lower as the person spends longer unemployed.
Was always backwards here. Encouraging a welfare state by giving you more the longer you’re on it.
It makes total sense for the job seekers benefit payment to be structured in this way. These would be people who would have built up their credits during employment. Only fair that they’re supplemented accordingly based on their last pay when they are in-between employment.
Faacinated to see if this gets backlash.
Imagine itll be shouted down by the whataboutme brigade.
This makes perfect sense
Makes perfect sense. Jobseekers allowance should be an interim solution. Not a lifestyle. Lots of jobs nowadays.
Anyone can pull pints, flip burgers, clean tables or wash dishes. They just need to swallow their pride. Earning your own money does a lot for self esteem too.
It was funny during the pandemic when some people suddenly realised how hard it was to live off basic social welfare. Overnight you seen the change form “Lazy dole Scroungers living comfortably from my hard work” to “How am I going to afford to live on social welfare if my job stops paying?”
I feel like this type of change is a step back for society. I would prefer if they just made a flat increase in social welfare payments across the board. Just because you contribute more in tax does not mean you should get more in return. That kind of defeats the entire purpose.
That’s how they do it in Germany. You get 66% of your previous salary for 12 months, and then you have to use savings, sell assets and downsize home if deemed too large before you are entitled to further assistance. And then you are on Hartz IV.
God bless the dole!
If part of the social contract is that you’re expected to earn a living, then there’s no excuse for the government leaving anyone unemployed – there needs to be a Job Guarantee program, with training and a decent wage – this could be directed into (but not limited to) e.g. directly building houses, to resolve the housing crisis.
It’s archaic that people are left unemployed long term – the type of policy that belongs in a long-past century.
There is lots of work in the service industry. Lazy fucks
For those that aren’t in the know: right now, people who have recently lost their jobs actually get a lower rate of social welfare annually. They don’t get double payments at Christmas, and they don’t get the fuel allowance, a payment which increases your weekly rate by 15% for 50% of the year, and has recently included additional lump sum payments.
The longer your on the dole in Ireland the less you should get.
I know far too many people who live on the dole and it enables them to never look for jobs. (outside Dublin)
