‘The Dutch do not want to give consent for Croatia’s admission to Schengen because the Netherlands has a technical government, Vecernji list writes on Tuesday.

The Slovenian presidency of the Council of the European Union put on the provisional agenda of the next meeting of interior ministers conclusions on Croatia’s readiness to join the Schengen zone, but the daily unofficially learns that the Netherlands is signaling that it may not be ready to support the decision.

The conclusions in question are not the final decision on Croatia’s admission to Schengen, but a step before that. With these conclusions, which are now in question, the EU Council confirms in writing what the European Commission has already said: that Croatia has met all the technical preconditions for entering the Schengen zone without borders.

The final political decision is yet to come. It will be a special decision of the Council, which will be adopted after the Council consults the European Parliament on the decision to admit Croatia to Schengen. But that political decision cannot be reached if this first step is not adopted. The Slovenian government intends to take this first step now, before the end of the Slovenian presidency, which ends on 31 December, after which the French will take over the presidency. However, at a meeting of Coreper (Committee of Permanent Representatives in the Council of the EU), the Netherlands, as we unofficially learn from an informed source, expressed reservations even before a deeper debate opened.

They allegedly explained this by the fact that a technical government is in force in the Netherlands and therefore they would rather not decide on such a sensitive issue. Elections in the Netherlands were held back in March, and a new ruling coalition is still being negotiated. This is already a record long period of government formation in the history of Dutch democracy.

One Dutch source confirmed to us that the country’s position on Schengen enlargement has always been one of the most critical and cautious, especially as regards whether fundamental rights are respected at the borders that should become the new external borders of the Schengen area. This is a principled position on Schengen enlargement in general, and when asked what the current position of the Netherlands is on the specific issue of conclusions to be adopted in December and confirm Croatia’s readiness for Schengen, our Dutch source says that there is no final Dutch position yet. working on it.

Another source, referred to behind-the-scenes negotiations in and around the EU Council, says the Dutch are showing good will, sincerely wanting to help and co-operating with the Slovenian presidency to build a consensus on the conclusions, Vecernji List reports.’

  2. Is anyone keeping a record of the excuses used by the Netherlands to veto eastern EU states’ access to Schengen?

  3. There are only two things I can’t stand in this world: People who are intolerant of other people’s cultures, and the Dutch.

  4. Lol, such a lame excuse. So all of the EU states should postpone any important decision because the Dutch aren’t able to hold proper elections. Imagine how EU would function if every single member were to block any initiative whenever they have internal shit happening.

  5. Fuck this shit. What could we, european citizens from Romania do to get the goodwill of the dutch gvnt. so we don’t have to queue for hours at the border with Hungary?

  6. We don’t have a government, but parliament could vote to give the caretaker government permission for it. Not sure if there would be a majority though, depends on Rutte’s party.

  7. Well they should address the issue again when they finally form the government. If that is the biggest obstacle, then there’s no real problem.

I hope it’s not just an excuse.

  8. I think if the Dutch veto Croatia too then Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia should start economic retaliation against them. With all criteria met we have been refused access multiple times for no reason other than political bullshit. All Dutch businesses should be audited, controlled, taxed appropriately, fined (if justified) and in general be subjected to as much hassle as possible. All under the confines of existing laws of course.

I think that’s only fair considering the hassles our businesses need to support at the borders. It levels the playing field.

I don’t wanna even start on the fact that Romania and Bulgaria struggled to keep quality democracy running (as much as possible) and managed to with the cost of heavy street movements and protests and avoided ending up in the situation of Poland and Hungary. Both of them are Schengen states!

With these attitudes from the Dutch the populists and autocrats only gain ammunition. Who gains if the Eastern flanc flips? Certainly not the Dutch as they’re heavily invested here.

  9. First time i’m hearing about this. I don’t het why this is such a big deal. Just vote with the whole parliament or amni thinking too easily about this?

So what else is my government doing or rather not doing because some weak excuse of not being trough the formation yet?

  10. As a Croatian, I just don’t get it. Croatia had zero say in what criteria for joining are; they were set by the Dutch and other western governments. If we have fulfilled all the criteria, why not let us in; on the other hand if there is additional criteria we have to fulfill why not write it down and let us know instead of thos pathetic political game where rules and conditions are actually completely arbitrary and there is always some bullshit excuse that serves only to hide the disdain that they have and always will have towards Eastern Europeans. If it’s corruption say it in the rules, if it’s the human rights say it in the rules, if it’s the average number of ATM machines per capita than say it in the bloody rules…

  11. Sure, you have your arguments. But do not point at us when we’re blocking Northern Macedonia

  12. Is there a clear list of the votes, I know we get all the slack for this but with Romania and Bulgaria we weren’t the only country to vote no even tho we get all the blame…

  13. I’m sure that when German tourists start spending 12 hours at border crossing this summer a solution will be found.

  14. You know who else has a caretaker government right now? Portugal. I don’t hear Portugal objecting.

This is just the Dutch being on-brand.

  15. I have a solution : admit Bulgaria and Romania.

Suddenly, the Balkans are a non-Shengen pocket into the larger Shengen space. Admit them too as it’s easier for everybody.

The rest of the EU adhesion process remains unchanged.

    What you say ?

  16. Does this mean they’ll still be lumbered with the Rafales? Or can they return them if they don’t end up getting admitted to Schengen

  17. Bulgaria,Romania, Referendum against Ukraine an EU association agreement and now Croatia. If you don’t mind I want to say from all of us. Fuck you Dutch

  18. Always the Dutch or French with some random excuse to shoo the Balkan nations away. This is getting ridiculous.

  19. Why are Dutch people such assholes? Go make your own ‘elite’ Club if other Europeans are not good enough for you.
