To be fair, people are used to it. The children’s ward was closed for more than a year due to the lack of doctors.
People who go to the ER there in the evening usually have to wait until 9am when all the doctors come in. During the night there’s only 1 doctor available (experienced this 2 months ago when a relative went to triage at midnight and left the hospital at 12pm next day). I live 15 minutes away from hospital Garcia de Orta.
Other fun facts about the Portuguese health system :
It’s very common for pacients having to queue at 6am at their local clinic to get an urgent appointment, later than that and there will be no available slots and you need to come back the following day.
Nurses make 900 euros.
A doctor told me that a lot of doctors are moving to Belgium.
The health minister said last week that doctors should be more resilient and complain less (health staff work very long hours).
Many Cancer diagnostics have been cancelled and delayed for the last 2 years.
It is perfectly normal to have to wait 3 or 4 years for a non urgent surgery.
There’s been a boom of private hospitals over the last 6 years. They focus primarily on making money through never-ending exams (I know someone who spent thousands of euros in exams over an year with no diagnosis while in the public hospital the problem was found in 2 weeks).
