AskMalta: Hi! I am a tourist and am wondering what is this cannon/fireworks thing (please excuse me if i’m wrong) that is fired every sunset and why is it fired?

3. Fireworks. It’s firework season in malta. Aka the entire summer.

4. Fucking Gozitans trying to conquer Valletta again.

   Gozitans and Beltin are natural enemies. Like Gozitans and Zurrieqin, or Gozitans and Sliemizi! Or Gozitans and Gozitans! Damn Gozitans, they ruin everything.

5. Maltese love noise pollution, but they call it tradition.

6. You see it all started when the gathering launched their fleet from Gozo with the aim to behead Muscat. So Mark Paul Sayadi Vassallo iii launched a counterattack and nuked Valletta on both sides to turn it into a peninsula, which would be easier to defend, at the cost of 9 million lives. This led to setting off a series of sinkholes which made the mediterranean sea come into existence. This was all in 200,000BCE by the way. Malta ruled the world and the only reason we fell is because Sayadi was from Żabbar and enjoyed drinking leaded petrol.

7. Those are feast fireworks. During the evening they are coloured. Almost every town has a religious feast dedicated to a saint.

8. Wait until they wake you up at from 8am… as a night shift worker, I want to go outside the firework makers house and wake them up with pointless explosions throughout the night and see how they like it!

13. Festa season. Each week there is a celebration. Every town want to boast superiority in fireworks. The “bomb” alike canon fire is what is called il kaxxa. They’ll be almost frequent when taking the statue of the saint in and out of the church.

14. To give you an actual answer. I once complained to someone who is a fireworks enthusiast about the horrible daily daytime blasts. ( not only in the evening btw but at 8am,midday and sunset) Apparently traditionally the day fireworks are to ward away evil aka the devil. The louder the better. There now exists an ongoing competition to see who manages to make the loudest one yet. Possibly causing permanent deafness in us poor plebs. #troglodytes #stillstuckinthedarkages

15. Maltese trying to conquer Gozo. The two islands have been in conflict since Dragut perished during the Great Siege of Malta.
