As an American, my apologies. This asshole is a professional contrarian, who always seems to oppose bi-partisan legislation, or common sense ideas. In our very evenly divided senate, he uses his swing vote to cause bills to fail, and then when people get angry and focus media attention on him, he uses the spotlight to push whatever bullshit he wants, or gaslight the nation with baseless “whataboutism”. Nothing he does is in good faith, and part of me thinks he loves the attention, good or bad. And of course, people in his home state keep voting for him because they just like that he causes problems for the opposing party, even if it’s legislation that would help them.

Rand Paul has always been somewhat on the fringe of what is consensus in Congress. He isn’t a bad man, just has a different view. That said, he can only slow the process in the US down but cannot stop the US from voting yes to Finland and Sweden joining Nato. Slowing it down isn’t that critical as Turkey is the real sticking point and will likely be last to agree.
What is important though, is that many in the US, millions of people, are tired of countries like Germany taking advantage of the US and not investing in their military leaving the financial burden and potential casualty burden on the US. This is a growing trend and it last came to a head when President Trump put forward the exit of the US from NATO. People are mad about this issue. Canada now has also lowered their military investment for the same reason but yet were gleeful to be the first to vote for Finland and Sweden to join Nato which just strikes me as wrong. I think NATO can be a force for good around the world and should be expanded to include Japan, South Korea, New Zealand and Australia. It would bring peace to the world. But I also feel taken advantage of by many NATO nations and support withdraw if they do not step up and I have no expectation that they will since they only talk to it but never do it.
