Well yes, as your current contract is coming to an end, they have that right. You also have the right to switch to a different supplier or to ask Engie for a fixed contract.
Exactly as Chocobokes said. Your product’s contract ended, a new contract starts, that always means you get a new price and formula in essence. In this case, since they don’t offer fixed tariffs anymore, they can only put you on variable. If you don’t want that: time to change suppliers
Go check out the v-test and see about changing suppliers. You won’t find much in the way of fixed contracts anymore, but you’ll likely find something marginally cheaper at least.
yeah thats the way they do it. I had the bad luck my supper cheap fixed rate “groepsaankoop” contract had a duration of one year ended right in the middle of this energy crisis thing earlier this year. they quoted me a variable rate 4 times the price for the same consumption. Obviously I packed up and left to different one. Still paying 3X the amount of last year but still…
Yep I had mine too almost 3 times expensive lol
Luminus still offers fixed contracts. I suggest changing now as they expect the prices to double again in August.
It’s not feasible for suppliers anymore to offer fixed pricing. The risks are sky high and the prebuy hedging costs insane amounts. I’m honestly surprised Luminus still offers fixed pricing. That’s the last supplier that still does. They’re asking a huge amount tho, 30,29 c€/kWh for electricity, 14,03 for gas.
The electricity is a big no-no, but the gas actually doesn’t seem that bad knowing prices are on the rise. In 3 days, start of a new month, I’m sure they’ll raise it to 16 or 18 so for those on the fence, I’d suggest getting their gas optiflix. You can change it to another one once pricing drops.
Why has anyone still a contract with Engie?
They automatically renew contracts, unless you’re bailing out. And now is a good moment to bail out.
So glad I reluctantly accepted a fixed price 3 year contract proposal from a pushy Lampiris salesperson last summer. I did negociate an extra 50€ discount of course, as I felt being harassed by phone like this was a bit fishy.
Same with Eneco, few more months to figure out if I’ll take their variable offer or find something else. But I expect you’re fucked whatever you do right now.
Aaah so the people with a digital meter will also get more income for the electricity they put on the net, right? Right???!!!
Happened to me with mega. I didn’t notice until several months later.
I received an email Confirming I had a fixed contract. I didn’t open the attached pdf with the details because I assumed tt would be OK.
Turns out in the pdf they signed me up with a variable one
I had the same email today. Been expecting it. Sucks yeah
Change as soon as possible.
**Never just accept the terms they give you**, they’re always more expensive than changing contracts yourself.
Just use [https://www.mijnenergie.be/](https://www.mijnenergie.be/) and pick whatever is cheapest. Luminus also still offers fixed contracts which is imo a lot better than picking variable now.

Become a customer of june, they monthly check all contracts and change for you to the cheapest one. It costs you 59 a year but you save from 200 to 300 euros a year.
Same with eneco
Yes this is very logisch toch
As to change it to direct, it’s cheaper
Those supporting totalitarian sanctions against Russia instead of diplomacy should not complain. They should be happy in fact. Cold winter showers in solidarity with Ukraine 🇺🇦
Got pretty much the same letter from eneco
…This is 100% normal.
Your contract ends, when you signed it it had an expiration date. Did you expect them to say “we like you so much we’ll extend that contract even though it’s much lower than current market prices”?
Don’t get me wrong: Engie is an evil greedy sack of shit, but there’s nothing wrong with the practice of changing your contract to a variable one once your contract is up.
Crapp, I can expect the same letter from them any day then.
Had the same mail today, I believe prices will not be lowering soon so I signed a contract with Luminus Optifix, fixed prices. Sure it’s going to be more expensive, but I know what’s coming for the next 2 year. If the prices go down, I’ll get another contract somewhere else.
Meanwhile engie is giving lower rates for their french customers, because our former prime minister Guy Verhofstadt sold electrabel to the French.
And when you have gov control over the gas/electrical companies,.you can set the price by law.
Therefor the inflation is less in France than in Belgium/The Netherlands.
Nothing surprising here
I signed a contract in November 2021, I can assure you I’m quite happy with it as it was one of the last fixed prices they gave out.
I’m dreading November 2022 as I’m likely to pay 2x what I’m currently paying.
I’m hoping by then prices go down but it seems unlikely
War sux….
If you use gas, a contract that’s related with the Belgian gas index (ZTP) could be a better one than a contract related with the Dutch TTF.
Reason: The Dutch TTF is prone to speculation. The gas price of your monthly or quarterly contract is calculated with the average of the daily gas price within the previous month or quarter.
The Belgian gas index (ZTP) is less prone to speculation because of the steady LNG shipments that arrive in Zeebrugge.
If the Dutch TTF would do wild upside swings, that upside will be taken into account when the average is calculated by your provider but the ZTP should remain calmer with less or no upside swings and that should result in a lower average.
WATCH OUT!!!!
they switch you to “easy variabel” wich is 60€ a month more expensive then “direct variabel”
the only difference is some better customer care wich will suck anyway and that you will get the final bill in the post.
so you will pay around 700€ more for just a letter instead of an email!!!
Engie is so fucked. They have sent people e-mails with a link and when they clicked it they automatically got switched from their current provider to Engie. Also Engie is way more expensive and they scam students for money.
